I bought a mint Cally Mack Daddy CB 58/14 at 2nd Swing and a mint Cleveland CBX Zipcore 58/10 at PGATSS. The loser will be returned. Results below.

Cally shaft is graphite KBS Hi Rev G 80.
CBX has DG Spinner 115.

The bounce numbers are meaningless. The CBX is really about 18, and the MD sole is just a wide curve so where do you measure? If you keep your hands ahead, the CBX will play with more bounce. Both have the leading edges fairly high and they come up more if you open them.

1). Uphill chip, dormant Bermuda rough, into the grain. This is one of the nastiest lies around. I played it like a basic chip with the ball off the left edge of my right foot and hands slightly ahead, and hitting down but shallow. Most wedges just grab and stop, you cannot glide into the ball.

The MD grabbed pretty hard but then rode out on the bounce. The shots were acceptable though. Didn’t leave any in front of me.

The CBX got through quite a bit better. Shots were more precise.
Winner CBX.

2). Dormant grass worn down to sandy practice area dirt. Just a hint of grass nubs. Same style of swing. Can’t baby it.

MD flew a little higher and results were good.
CBX was better but if I babied it, it went nowhere.
Winner, CBX if I make the stroke. But it’s close.

3). Flat area with short grass and no grain. This was a fairly basic chip lie.

MD higher, CBX crisper. CBX wins by a little.

4). Could I flop them off the above lie? Very tight grass. This is not reasonable, but let’s try. I placed the ball carefully to get it sitting up.

I’m pretty okay flopping off any lie with the right wedge. These are not. 25 yards carry about 25 feet high. I was trying to just do a floppy chip, like 20 foot carry, 10 feet high. Impossible. I think on decent grass I could do something but limited.

No clear winner.

5). Basic bunker shot. Our sand is deep and heavy. But damp enough to not feel bottomless.

Using my normal technique, which is slightly open face.
MD was more variable but okay. CBX was easier and more consistent.

Then I realized I could probably just do a basic Alien style shot. Square, hit down behind the ball. I was hitting lines of 8 balls. With this technique I could just step, whack, step, whack….
They came out about as good as with my normal shot.

Again I liked the CBX better.

So no doubt on the winner. This is the wedge I’ve needed all winter for our lies and sand.
