Even if the DOJ says there's a problem, nothing may happen. IIRC they ruled against the Tour in the 90's and yet, like the Teflon Don, the Tour came out unscathed. Supposedly they had such close ties to so many big shots that they didn't even get a wrist slap.

Edit: a much more golf knowledgeable buddy just told me there was no ruling against the tour. A bit of Googling shows there MIGHT have been a ruling against the Tour, but Finchem pulled out all the stops to try to make sure that didn't happen.

Hopefully it won't be a secret bargaining chip for the upcoming state visit. 👀

    Eguller Tiger's press conference

I thought some of it was BS.
He took "guaranteed money" before he ever hit a ball as a PGA Tour pro, from a sweatshop company no less.
He's the last person to be yapping about anybody else's life decisions, motivations or whatever else, given his history.
He's just another rich Tour shill, so his opinion from his ivory tower means jack shit to the little people, and should hold no extra weight other than having an opinion like everyone else.
    JMO!

      Eguller

I saw all of Tiger’s press conference. It was very good. First time he’s commented in depth on LIV. He basically said the same as has been said before that without world ranking points many will give up opportunities to play in the Majors etc.. Plus much more.

But this was far from Michael Jordon’s Republicans buy sneakers too comment. In the past Tiger was infamous for saying nothing when talking. He gave his opinion on Greg Norman and LIV in no uncertain terms. Very refreshing seeing him speak his mind.

I think Tiger realizes he’s been the face of Golf for 25 years and is now willing to take the mantel of leadership that Jack and Arnold were for the Tour in the past.

That is why I’ve never bought any Nike product. Yes , his sponsor $$ was not clean either. It is a matter of degree IMO. However, it was a Tiger I didn’t expect to hear from. Beaten up and mellowed maybe.

        ex. Patrick Reed.

A non-member may Monday qualify for a PGA tournament.

        Any problems there? 🤔

And let's not go into that barred/banned/suspended discussion again. If he is not a member, he cannot be any of those things. It would be like someone telling me that I can't Monday quailfy....why would I be barred, I'm not a member?
Borderline discrimination, imo. If not directly so.

          Par4QC I can't Monday quailfy.

Maybe, but it will be interesting to see 'open' qualifying such as the US Open. Criteria changes ?

Eguller I just wonder what is stopping the ones that gave up their membership, from doing something like this? And, I really don't put it past some of them to 'test the system'.

They better not stop me! Waste of a lot of practice. 🤣

Par4QC I really don't put it past some of them to 'test the system'.

Not sure what those fat $$$$ cats would bother unless a Major. 🤔

Eguller Beaten up and mellowed maybe.

              Maybe.
I see an out of touch rich guy, with no clue about the young-uns' personal situations, who expects them to have the same drive to win majors etc etc.
If you are doing a presser and you find yourself saying "I don't understand", that's your cue to shut up and move on to the next question, imo.

Eguller his sponsor $$ was not clean either

The source is not the biggest issue (I am not Mr. Morals like Sneaky), it's the fact he got guaranteed money before he even started. Same deal as the amateurs now.
He was LIV before LIV, and doesn't know it.
Times change but he seems to be stuck in the past.

Eguller. I hope not. You may not like what these guys are doing but it's not illegal and the rules shouldn't be changed to eliminate them.

garyt1957 You may not like what these guys are doing but it's not illegal

I don’t care at all - they can do want they want. Just accept the consequences of their decisions.
Based on the R & A telling the ungreat white shark to go away, all, but especially major qualifying will likely change. Their house, their rules.

Eguller. That's the point though. Why try to punish them by changing the rules? They've done nothing "wrong". It's The Open not the Somewhat Open. I totally get the PGA and DP trying to punish them but the majors should remain neutral. Well except the PGA Championship.

I agree. Open should mean open. And I'm sure a few sponsors will try to give exemptions here and there -- should be interesting.

                      ptjn1201 Open should mean open.

Many times it does. But, look at the qualifying criteria for the US Open for example. Full criteria is llsted
on the USGA website. It is more limited than most think. Monikers can be misleading.

garyt1957 it will mostly be a mute point moving forward as in IMO the LIV players level of play will suffer, in addition they will naturally no longer qualify at some point (less the major winners), even if the courts allow them to play. As I stated when this (LIV) first became a thing , these guys have essentially given up on their competitive careers and Tiger nailed it in his presser!

                          ode

Brandel Chamblee made a good point yesterday. In other sports the player is paid before he plays. In his example Tom Brady gets paid millions of dollars and if he doesn’t perform for the team he gets benched.

In the LIV model the player gets paid before he plays and there are no consequences for playing bad. Mickelson gets $200 million up front and finishes 20 over par in his first two LIV Tournaments. He’s already got his money. On to the next event to stink it up.

Other Sports - Consequences for not playing well.
LIV - Paid to just show up. Everyone gets a trophy regardless.

Plus this was interesting. Dustin Johnson got $175 million. The entire purse for the DP World Tour this year is $155 million.

As far as the Majors go. The PGA Tour has nothing to do with any of them. They can do what they want. If they think the LIV model is bad for the game then I can see them not allowing LIV players to play.

But again, if LIV doesn’t change its model to 72 holes they can’t get world ranking points, therefore won’t qualify, so it’s a moot point. Plus there’s other criteria. One being changes to how many points are given (strength of field etc.). But the powers that be seem to be autonomous and can do what they wish.
