I like both Rose and Woodland. Both nice guys. I'm sure a lot of people are rooting for Woodland after showing the clip on how he treated the girl with Down Syndrome at the Waste Management Tournament. Played golf with a Brit who had a beer with Rose and told me how nice of a guy Rose is.
If Gary Woodland doesn't finish the deal today, it isn't because of the fire that has been in his belly since he began playing competitive sports. This short article on his sports background is interesting and Lynn Riney, his high school golf coach, and I have teed it up together on a few occasions on our respective clubs back in the day.
Interesting that only one player (Willie Anderson - 1903, 1904, 1905) in all the years of the tournament, has won the US Open three consecutive years. If Brooks can somehow eke out a win today, he will certainly be in rarified air.
Don't care who wins, just hope to see some good golf and not one of those final rounds where the tournament is basically over midway through the back-nine.
I wanted Phil to win, knowing it wasn't likely. Now I'd really like to see history made and see Koepka win. Woodland would be good too but I have a feeling he ends up no better than third.
Phil winning the US Open would undoubtedly be the story of the year in golf. Sadly, at this stage of his career I just don't see it happening. Not impossible, but highly unlikely given his history and the fact that he just doesn't have the consistency off the tee in run-of-the-mill events, much less narrowed fairways that are typical of most US Opens. This week was his real last chance to get that feather in his cap imo. The course setup has been fair, on a layout that he's won tournaments on 5 different occasions. This tournament will be the glaring omission in an otherwise legendary career.
On a related note... at least he's not nosedived like Ernie Els has. His last win came six years ago on the European Tour, and I was somewhat surprised to see him ranked as high as he is currently - #348.
In 12 starts on the PGAT this year, he's only managed 12 rounds in the 60's, and he's either WD or missed the cut in half of them. But he's had a helluva career, nothing to hang is head about. Father Time has finally caught up with him.

Looking at the scores from those going out earlier and finished, or close to it, the course is there for the taking. One -5 and a -4 with one to go so far with many of the early players scoring better today. (The exception is Tiger +3 after 5). Someone is going to WIN it this afternoon by playing stellar golf and not necessarily is going to back into the Championship. Fasten your seat belts.

The USGA somehow managed to NOT screw this US Open up,greens,course setup etc.
all went pretty smooth.
They should've promoted Mike Davis a long time ago,he had no business stetting up courses
for their one tournament a year that usually turned into a fiasco.
And props to Fox sports,I thought they did a stellar job of covering this event,especially going
commercial free for the last hour or so.

Congrats to Gary Woodland.... deserving major champion winner, played some inspired golf this week. But most importantly, he seems to be an all-around good guy. I thought the interaction between him and Scottsdale Amy afterward was a great addition to what ended up being a memorable weekend for the both of them.
And I'd be remiss to not point out just how cool this sport is from a classy sportsmanship perspective; between the fist-bump from Justin on the 17th green after Gary's phenomenal chip shot that he nearly holed, and then the number of fellow tour players who hung around to congratulate him afterward - as Johnny would say, Good stuff.
Hard to get my head around the idea being that there's only one major left on the schedule this season. On to Royal Portrush now.
And... it's been a long time it seems since I last saw a major championship won by a player sporting a Wilson golf cap!
Also, congrats to Viktor Hovland for winning low-am and the new owner of the Open's new 72-hole amateur scoring record previously held by Nicklaus back in 1960. He finished the week -4.
He joins Phil Mickelson and Matt Kuchar as the only three players to have won low-am honors in both the Masters and the US Open since 1990.
His professional career starts next week, as he turned pro immediately following the final round today. He expects to compete in the upcoming next four events on the tour schedule, according to the tour's press release.
