I was in the Newark, Ohio area today, and decided to drive over to The Golfworks outlet store.....
I told myself all I needed was a dozen wood ferules, but I can always find something there to buy! First I picked up a Tommy Armour putter....a mallet, face balanced, double bend shaft, sat perfectly square....so I stroked a few putts with it. Of course I made every damn one....even from 8-10 feet!!! BUT, I told myself I have at least two perfectly good putters that I putt well with, so I moved on. I picked up my ferrules and a 15 pack of Top Flite D2 Feel golf balls (how can you pass up $6.99 for 15 balls?!), and was ready to leave.
Then I asked the guy behind the counter why they don't make high lofted woods anymore. He replied that it was just a change in design philosophy....that they think hybrids are more useful and in demand by golfers. But he said, check the Demo's hanging on the wall, that there might still be something there. Sure enough, there was a Maltby UFW #9 wood, 24 degrees, hanging there. It was on a ladies flex shaft, so it had that working against it, but I asked him if I could take it outside and hit it. They have a nice little driving range there and a barrel full of new range balls, so I hit about 15 or 20 balls with this club. Holy Crap!!! I hit the hell out of it....with a ladies shaft...straight, high, long....
So I went inside and asked him how much. The guy checks with his supervisor, who says "Let's just blow it outta here for $10 bucks!" I couldn't reach for my wallet fast enough!!!
So now I have to decide whether to leave the ladies shaft in it (with the "ladies" scratched off, of course!) or
pull it and install a senior shaft that I normally use. Can't wait to get it home and try it some more!!
