I’m looking to put together the ultimate SGI half set (6, 8, PW) for winter use and quick 9 hole rounds. I’m really looking for the most point and shoot irons I can get. While I’d love some Big Bertha OS’s, or some G700’s I’m not looking to spend up for them. Anyone have any recommendations?

Some contenders:

My default fall back may be some Rapture or Rapture V2s, but they may be a bit pricy.

I’ll be pairing with a light (for me) shaft - Likely an Apollo Spectre Lite or maybe even something in graphite like a RT 95 or 105.

Opinions wanted!

Jelopster Swing Science FC One Plus

Biggest shovel/hybrid out there. I fit/build them for those that need/want ultra wide sole and a lot of forgiveness. I've got a test set that I play w/ graphite and they are point and shoot.

To compare a SS FC-One PLus 7i foreground vs. a Louisville Classic 50's USA Forged blade 7i background.

Buy some original Big Berthas, X-12s or X-14s off the bay and shaft them with what you want.

Although I don’t have the KE4 Max, I am certain they are SGI.

Damn. This place is like a crack house. Just bought a 5,6,8,P and S Callaway X-12 on E bay. Why? I have no idea other than it will be a winter project to keep me busy.

Jelopster the 890s are really designed to get the ball in the air. You are a younger guy right? Do you need that help to elevate the ball?

39 and high SS…just a very inconsistent ball striker. (Sway and don’t always transfer weight forward) I hit it plenty high when I catch it, but my miss is a thin.

Jelopster I have found that irons with huge soles will not do that much to help your thin miss and your good balls will balloon out of sight.

Try the Normal FC one or some Cally x-12s or x-14s. Narrow sole Game improvement

Turf interaction is the sole configuration/bounce with AofA factors to fit for Jelopster. What kind of turf do you mainly play, how steep, picker, sweeper, tendency to flip add loft?

              scotts33

Central PA - so I’d say medium turf. I’d say sweeper - I certainly don’t hit down on the ball. My best clubs are driver (I hit up on it well) and 3w - probably b/c I sweep it.

scotts33 nice stuff…fortunate that my little public 9 holer is owned/maintained by the adjacent country club.

My normal turf “interaction” is minimal aside from the odd chunk

Ok so you realize it's a technique/swing issue I am assuming and at 39 you are young and will be playing til you get to the curmudgeon age that many of us are. That's really what to do. You aren't unlike the majority of rec. golfers who play off their back foot and hit "fat" shots behind the ball or thin shots with irons. It's the most common malady of ALL golfers.

But on equipment, hybrid like irons do make it easier to miss hit the ball and still score. I'd say for sweepers it makes it easier. But with that kind of design you have to get over the optical situation. But any SGI head is going to have this optical ball/SGI head.

💯. With 3 young kids I’m happy to play my crappy golf when I get the spare few hours vs going to the range or otherwise practicing. I just enjoy getting out either with some buds, or waking a quick 9 solo. Really appreciate the advice (and your time)!

@sdandrea1 - Looks like you’ve played both the Acer XV HTs and the Maltby M890s. These are looking like the budget shovels I’ve been looking for. Thoughts?

I’d look at Ke4 max first, M890, then the SS FC One +.

The max are a great design that (imo) would fit you perfectly, from what you’ve described.

Ping k15 or Taylormade Burner plus would fall into what you’re looking for.

Subsonic Damn. This place is like a crack house.

Well it sort of works opposite for me wondering why you guys keep buying crap for no reason. Like Jelopster wants clubs for winter or a quick 9 hole round… think about it, can’t you use the clubs you have already???? Only reason I see for a second set of clubs is for a summer/winter home so you don’t have to ship or pay baggage fees.
