Typhoon Guy I just had for a lesson, we spend one of the lessons around the green. So I put a ball on the fringe to a pin 20 feet away and asked him do what he normally does to get it there. I put down 5 balls, he grabs a 56 degree and puts 3 on the opposite fringe, chunks one and gets one half decent. I then put down 3 balls and putted them all within a couple feet.
Something that I try to bear in mind for shots around the green is 'Put the ball in the air as little as you can get away with'. In other words, use as little loft as seems reasonable/sensible for a shot - there needs to be a good reason to use a more lofted club (to take rough, an undulation or a bunker out of play, the lie doesn't allow me to putt or chip with an 8-iron, etc.)
I've been finding this idea particularly useful in the dry/firm conditions we've had for most of the last month - it's much harder to predict how the ball is going to react on landing on a shot hit in the air compared to something kept closer to the ground.
