Sneakylong Lot's of gullible people in the world as we know

Then perhaps those gullible people are the Saudi's who think it will work?

Stu1961 Then perhaps those gullible people are the Saudi's who think it will work?

Or maybe the Saudis, before investing billions of dollars, have done a little research. Perhaps they've deduced that even though there are some holdouts on GolfBuzz that they'll have to get back to later, worldwide they think it's working for them. 🤔

Sneakylong "Sportwashing has been used to describe events as far back as the 1936 Summer Olympics which were held in Berlin, Germany during Nazi rule and where used to spread Hitler's ideals of race and anti-Semitism

This "sportswashing" is sneaky BS. Germany decided to host the games to sportswash Hitler and the Nazi party's agenda two years before they took power!? Berlin won the right to host the '36 Olympic games in 1931 under Paul von Hindenburg.

Another great example of sportswashing that didn't work though.

Sneakylong The money comes thru donations in one form or another.

But not from PGA coffers, therefore, they are not charitable. They do not handle the donated money. It generally stays within the community, as they are the ones that gave.
It's kind of like this President we had one time.....taking all credit, did nothing!😅 (you may pick 'the one time')

Par4QC Gee, wonder why they are so mouthy about LIV??

Players that choose to stay on the PGA tour do have much to worry about. If viewership and gate tickets are reduced due to split public interest or lowered public interest then the value of sponsorship goes down. Purses and individual contracts would ultimately be downsized accordingly.

Edit to add: Of course they aren't really worried about that. They just have a stronger love of the game than others and are playing for the legacy.

Walterjn I'm just trying to be a good boy and listen to those who know more about this than I do. I'm not sure who is right, and who is wrong.

          Me too.
I am not advocating for either side and I don't see a need to pick one side or another.
I leave that to the sanctimonious.
I am pro-choice, in all aspects of life.
I find the whole thing interesting and it's fun speculating at what the future holds.
It's even more fun when I'm right.
          😉

I don't even really care about the LIV tour. I didn't make any attempt to watch it last week. However, I do not think it is an entity of evil either. It is another option. One that I think is likely to fail, but maybe not if enough of the top talent heads for the guaranteed money.

mikeintopeka Maybe he's waiting for a little better payday from the rival?

He just got married and hasn't been 100% health wise, so no need to put his iron in the fire, yet.
I think he joins his brother at some point, as long as he can still play the majors.
Remember, he is a late bloomer and learned his chops on the Euro Tour, so I don't think he's beholding to the PGA Tour whatsoever.

Spuzz fun speculating at what the future holds.

Any speculation on what happens to the PGA if LIV signs are the up and coming talent and leaves the scrubs for the PGA? What happens to the PGA in the future (read - 10 years down the line)?

Curious what buzzards think about that. The Big names that have chosen to stay with the PGA have retirement $ already. These new players have choices....LIV reportedly signed an amateur with a $6Mil signing bonus and a $250K per tournament appearance fee. So imagine all the new talent getting these types of deals and sign with LIV for their future.

What happens to the PGA then, do their sponsors stick around for a 2nd rate tour?

Sure is fun to speculate what the future holds....Fun times ahead.

Stu1961 The PGA gives 3% of their annual Revenue

Net Proceeds, after they pay themselves 45 million.

Not going to happen, imo, if there is no TV exposure.

Here at the John Deere Classic, we've always been kicked in the teeth with scheduling. We never get 'big' names, except 'has been' big names. Yes, some of today's big names DID play here. They would win (esp. after a sponsor's exemption) then say....F-off Quad Cities! Still, the place is packed every day of the tournament. Yeah, tickets are cheap, food is cheap, but they would still go at double the costs. And just look at the has-beens & no names we get to play here!! The people don't care who it is as long as the tournament goes on.

So, people are not going to stay away from golf tournaments, no matter where held. Esp. now, (supposedly)after Covid.
They don't give a damn about PGA or LIV, they only care about golf, and going and having a good time (see: skipping work)

                      I did address this earlier.
Compromise by the PGA Tour (adapt or die) There seems to be a lot of disgruntled PGA employees for some reason.
They cannot ignore it and hope it goes away. The horse has left the barn.
                      Some Spuzzmusings:
Guaranteed money is a good place to start. It might even kick start the so-called "inclusivity" the tour preaches about, but fails to deliver.
Bigger purses on the Korn Ferry Tour might also help and deter some from jumping ship.
These guys travel in groups and stay in motorhomes to keep the dream alive. How many of these guys are tour caliber but bow out due to being broke? I have no idea if this is a big thing or not.
More tour cards given out might help too.

KCee Well you can't be a non-profit if you leave money laying around

Makes me laugh every time I hear them thanking the volunteers "because without them, we couldn't have the tournament" when they should be adding "and we can't light hundies for our cigars" or something similar.

Par4QC Not going to happen, imo, if there is no TV exposure.

You are probably right. I just know that TV exposure is already eroding some due to the many people moving to streaming live events and content. I have no idea what that percentage is, but I'm pretty sure it's growing. I also don't doubt that the LIV folks are trying to work on TV - might be on some widely available cable network or such. They might be waiting to get a little more talent heavy in hopes that there won't be a close to zero viewer share once they do air something in the U.S.

Par4QC The people don't care who it is as long as the tournament goes on.

Same deal here for the Canadian Open.
For years, we were stuck in the week after The Open. Nobody showed up.
The tournament had to pay for a private jet to shuttle some back for free to get them to play here.
It wasn't until RBC started sponsoring some names and making it a sponsor requirement to play here that we got some names. Making the names play different tournaments has helped (which is why Rory has come here) and changing the date to June, which has helped a little. Even Tiger only played once, in his rookie year, then disappeared, except when he had American Express business to conduct here of course.
Watching Jay Monahan on TV here was a joke. I am surprised he knew where Canada is.
He couldn't give two shits about us, except this time he had an axe to grind and a TV network that obliged him.

And yet, the place was packed, as it usually is.

Spuzz I did address this earlier.

Yeah, I'm sure you did, but I did not sift thru the 840+ posts to find it. 😋

Par4QC Not going to happen, imo, if there is no TV exposure

I agree. Without LIV being broadcast on TV then the PGA Tour will continue to survive. The question is in what format? Will they change their business model to something Paul McGinley talked about or stick with the model they have now?

And as you mentioned before how many top players will go to LIV? They have some known names at the moment, but not many top ranked players.

And if LIV signs some of the new up and comers and there's no TV exposure and world ranking points, how will they be recognized as top talent?

Not many will see them play and they don't get into the Majors because they aren't getting world ranking points. But they'll have a lot of money. lol

Spuzz Makes me laugh every time I hear them thanking the volunteers "because without them, we couldn't have the tournament" when they should be adding "and we can't light hundies for our cigars" or something similar.

Without them we wouldn't have free labor! And we make them buy shirts and don't let them bring their own food or drink in so they have to buy ours lol. Taking advantage of your love of the game!
