FauxAmish Same here. I get it. I didn't get cold at that age and would have worn shorts to school if it was allowed. I'll wear shorts on the golf course at 40*. My legs don't get cold, just my hands and feet.

Got a friend that wears shorts all year round. He has nerve damage in his legs and feels no cold.
He can walk fine just not a lot of feeling in the legs.

I used to be able to do this too. That was until I got older and my knees got arthritis where I had surgery. I don't wear shorts golfing now until it's pushing 70°.

Been up all night and just heard what I thought was the sound of pipes bursthing. False alarm. Just the sound of ice and snow cascading down and off my roof. Ain't used to that sound anymore.

Toulon You should have been here 7-8 years ago when we had the early October blizzard. Over a foot of heavy snow and leaves are still on the trees. Power goes out so we are all in the living room on our devices and the shooting starts. Sounded like gunfire, but it was the trees snapping. I've never heard anything like that in my life. One tree snapping sure, but it was dozens and many were big. No power for 8 days. Several weeks for some people. So I feel for the people in Texas cuz that sucks.

I just opened up all the faucets in the house upstairs and down. All functioning normally. It's 33*. Tonight it's going to drop back to 19, so we'll drip the faucets once the temp dips back to 32

So thankful the pipes survived this situation. One more night and we may not see 32 degrees again until December.

meagain After turning off supply, open the faucets and hopefully a little water may drain. Any water in the pipes can still burst. But with the supply off you will not have damages.

Turn on all your faucets BEFORE you shut the off main and your system will syphon/purge itself almost dry.

Toulon yes, and at that point I would leave the taps open just in case what little water remaining does freeze it has a way to reduce any pressure.

I would OPEN all the faucets......get the water flowing, THEN shut off the main. The running water creates a siphon and purges your house pipes. Leave the taps open.

I ran all the faucets today after the temp got above freezing. Let them all run vigorously for a few minutes. Not going to shut off the main, but if i was for future, I wanted to hear your sage advice. Next time this happens, I'm just killing the water so I have less concern. The pipe thing made me very concerned. -7 is not what these pipes are rated for and I'm not sure how they didn't burst. The dripping must've saved them.

It's even better (if you have a basement) to open a faucet down there after you turn the water off. You also should open a faucet at the highest level of your home. The water will drain from the pipes quite quickly. The one upstairs is so you don't create a vacuum which will hold the water. It's like putting your finger on the top of a straw and taking the straw out of a glass of soda. It will hold the soda in the straw until you remove you finger from the top of the straw.

A funny, not funny story from today in our world. There are millions in Texas with boil water notices. A big town to our east has one and multiple towns to our west. We felt so fortunate that our town didn't have one.

Oops. My wife who is a tireless news hound, found out today that our development DID have a boil water notice, and it was from TWO DAYS AGO. She's made multiple cups of tea including one right before she found out. The water is said to be like drinking flood run off. Yum!

No vomiting or gastric issues...yet. I'm so thankful I found those multiple cases of bottled water on Wednesday. Our Walmart finally opened back up and stock was said to be good, at least yesterday.

I don't plan on going out until after the weekend. Hate weekend grocery shopping.
