77 at Bear Creek GC in Murrieta CA. Strange day, my driver was struggling which is rare these days. Still it was in play, and the only drive that found any trouble was my only attempt at a lay up with a 3w. I swear I hit 70% fairways with my driver, and maybe 25% when I lay up. This course usually has lightning fast greens, but they had let them grow a little for the hot summer and made the speed playable for once.
Anyway, irons were pretty solid (11 greens hit) and I had two approach shots to 1 foot for easy birdies. Short game was pretty good., but could have been great. Several putts were really close, but only made one over 10 ft. In a 4 hole span, I had a chip lip out, another chip heading dead center, hit the pin and pop straight back and hang on the edge, and then another chip lip out.
Funny - this was an outing for a club that I play with 3-6 times a year. The club has a "birdie chain", and this time I was in the group with the holder of the birdie chain, so it was up for grabs. I birdied #3 to take possession. Sometime in the last few years since I played with the chain group, a new custom was started. When the chain goes to a new holder, whiskey shots come out to the foursome. If you acquire the chain twice (or more) in a round, then it is a "fireball" which is a whiskey shot in a beer. So here was the groups birdie progression:
Sparky #3, Ron #5, Sparky #7, Mark #8, Ron #10, Mark #11, and Sparky #13. That's 3 whiskey shots and 4 fireballs. 🤮
