Blue Rondo is my favorite track from the Take Five album. I was at a summer music camp when the album came out, and a bunch of us drummers sat around on the grass one afternoon and figured out how to play all those different rhythms. It was only another year or so before I had a chance to see the group playing all of those songs.

Love the way Desmond has that way of (well, just cannot describe it in words). But, it reminds me of Clapton and the way he sort of changes up (sort of a stall or wait type playing for lack of a better way of putting it) but, that style of playing is what set them both apart. Hairs on the back of my neck stood up the first time I heard Desmond Blue Rondo.

Let me go ahead and say upfront that you're welcome.

One of the best acoustic versions ever by a woman that I just find incredibly sexy. And this song version doesn't do anything to dissuade my opinion of her. An oldie, but a goody.

(and it doesn't hurt that she bears a striking resemblance to my wife...)

Bangoman, Desmond's breathy tone set him apart from most other sax players. No squeaks, squawks or farts, just nice tones. The only other I can think of who played like this (on tenor, not alto) was Ben Webster.

As for the quartet, I only saw them as a group the one time, but saw Brubeck several times after that, including once with David Benoit. (Amazingly, they worked well together.) Never got to see Joe Morello again, or Eugene Wright. The group was like a shooting star - brilliant, then gone.

Saw Maynard Ferguson around 1975 and thoroughly enjoyed listening to a big band live. I still have my late brother's Holton MF horn.

Umfaan...Sorry to hear about your brother. I went thru that some months ago...I am still suffering. I spoike to him every morning and every night! And we always slammed the phone down on each other and for what? Arguing over music, musicians, best concerts, best movies, best actors/actresses....Same thing we do LOL. Wish I could still slam the phone down on him....

Personally............I'll still take Joni Mitchell! LOL She is/was amazing. I often though a Joni M and Neil Y show would be PERFECT. I would kill for that one...They each do 30 min or so and then sing together for 45 min.

Steve, unfortunately I don't think that "dream" collaboration will ever happen.
You might recall that she had a brain anyuerism a few years ago.
I learned of her via my future ex wifes introducing me to Tom Rush/The Circle Game.

I can understand you continuing to be a fan of hers given both of your loves of Jazz.
Mingus, Pastorious,she stretched our musical boundaries.

🙂, Tool, have always loved these guys, had the good fortune to see them at lollapalooza at alpine alley and then again when they Christen'd...the Resch Center. These guys have a ton of energy and the crowd is insane. At the Resch, show was general admission, with the floor being no seats and the sides having seats....think smallish basketball arena.....we were glad we took the seats as when we looked at the floor it was basically one big flow of motion.....Maynard with his mullet and sweats, lol, anyway fast forward to 5,26 of the video and you'll see what I'm talking about-

Glad you enjoy them. I don't get it. Nirvana I understood, Sound Garden I understand, Pearl Jam I understand. They had great musicians and great front men...this band...just a bunch of Tools.

Unfortunately, not much live music experience here. Particular songs don't stand out to me, but the most memorable live performances I've attended were Lonnie Brooks (a blues guy from Chicago) at the St. Louis VP Fair, Bo Diddley at the LA House of Blues, and the Allen Collins Band (remnant of Lynyrd Skynyrd after the crash) at the Mid-South Fair in Memphis. The environment probably meant as much to me as the performances, but the old memories are still fairly strong.

The most memorable live performance of a song was Don McLean performing American Pie at the same VP Fair that I saw Lonnie Brooks. Mr. McLean was performing quite well and I was enjoying his set, but much of the crowd was impatient and chanting "pie" constantly between songs. After he finally performed American Pie, most of the crowd moved onto other stages with McLean singing another 5 or so songs to me and my friends and maybe another hundred that stayed for the whole set. It was such a shame as I thought the whole set was entertaining even though I had to be talked into seeing him by my friends as I've never was a fan of his most famous song.

JDOOM...That is what happens when you're a 1 hit wonder. After the Pie song...nothing ground shaking...just so-so stuff like all one hitters.

Here is the problem with Joe B. I was Big tine hip on him 7 or 8 years ago. I talked him up to all my friends as they never heard of him. I purchased several studio cd's and 2 live cd's. His studio cd's are way over produced. No raw playing per se. His live cd's nothing really stood out.

As a pure guitarist...none better playing today. He has all the licks and plays them cleaner than anybody...anybody! I can't put my finger on it but I think the problem is he plays cover versions better, MUCH better, than his own stuff which is marginal at best. I kinda' put him in the same catagory as Rory Gallagher and Gary Moore only Joe B. is a better player. But, they had the same problem...they just couldn't write or play their own stuff better than covers.

I Know, I Know he is a real wower playing and blows the roof off da' joint! But he truly lacks something that Clapton, Jimmy P., Duane Allman, Peter Green and a very short list of others have. I just can't put my finger on it...but, he lacking something. And I hate to say this...but, it might be a lack of soul from within.

Bangoman lol, yeah they won't win any popularity contests, part of the reason I love them, they are in a class by themselves IMO.....very heavy and intense, and quirky/eccentric. They put out a ton of great stuff, back to opiate to present. Those other bands u mentioned are wildly popular, you could make the same comparison to countless other non mainstream grunge/alt music....not a good comparison. Tool is just out there, Maynard played the whole show in his boxer briefs, facing away from the crowd....hahaha, still laugh about this Everytime I think of it, but he was very polite and courteous, thanked the crowd over and over again and as I previously stated, put on a great show. Bagging on Maynard for being on smack is just silly....we've lost too many great musicians to drugs and many of the bands/musicians you like have been addicts.....i don't think they should get any less or more grief for their drug use. Its tacky. Back to the music, this is a music thread....check out tools version of no quarter....love it.

Off the top of my head, I can only think of 2 that really stand out. Well, 3 actually, but 2 of them were the same band and the same show.
the first 2 were the first time I saw Metallica, at Market Square in Indy. One and King Nothing were both epic. This was, by far, the best concert I have ever been to. I could go on and on about that show. I even bought the dvd they made from the tour. And still watch it. It was just an incredible show.
The other was when I saw Breaking Benjamin at a little bar in Indy. When they played Breakdown, it was amazing. I was actually pretty surprised by how good they were that night.
On a completely different note, the craziest stage entrance I ever saw, and will never forget, was when I saw Sammy Hagar live, when he was still just Sammy. It was the VOA tour. His stage entrance...was with a parachute. He jumped off the lighting above the stage and parachuted down. I still can't believe the chute opened quick enough to break the fall. And maybe (probably) there were ropes tied to him I didn't see. But it just looked completely insane.
