Kenner...First off my fav Alto Sax player is/was Paul Desmond...I have practically everything 'live' he did bootleg and store bought. His style was incredible. When he broke away from DB...the band was never the same. Louis Armstrong was probably the greastest Trumpet player of all time...starting in the late 20's. He became more famous in the 60's/70's because of that song. Count Basie and Duke Ellington were the 2 greatest band leaders of all time. I am also a fan of the Dorsey brothers as Tommy Dorsey use to play and record with black musicians under a different band name and he was the first to do that. Blacks did not play in white bands BUT TD changed all that as he knew how good some were.

I picked R&R as my choice of musical history as to dig in to all types of music and be well versed in all....is impossible. But, it is also impossible to overlook the greats you named if you truly LOVE music as I do.

Bangoman, it's good to know I have a soulmate here. I do like the big bands, and wish I could have seen the Dorseys, Ellington and especially Stan Kenton in the flesh (we did get to see his protégé Maynard Ferguson some years ago).

If I had to pick another favorite that I've seen in person, it would be Erroll Garner playing his own "Misty."

4 Words: Blue Rondo ala Turk If you know how to put that video up on here...educate some on why Dave Brubeck was a breakout jazz band....and Paul Desmond was a rarity as he was genius. His style was copied by many after and during his life...by white and black musicians!

Seen Richard Elliot in concert several times, great shows... but to see this one live is just too good to put into words.

Blue Rondo is my favorite track from the Take Five album. I was at a summer music camp when the album came out, and a bunch of us drummers sat around on the grass one afternoon and figured out how to play all those different rhythms. It was only another year or so before I had a chance to see the group playing all of those songs.

Love the way Desmond has that way of (well, just cannot describe it in words). But, it reminds me of Clapton and the way he sort of changes up (sort of a stall or wait type playing for lack of a better way of putting it) but, that style of playing is what set them both apart. Hairs on the back of my neck stood up the first time I heard Desmond Blue Rondo.

Let me go ahead and say upfront that you're welcome.

One of the best acoustic versions ever by a woman that I just find incredibly sexy. And this song version doesn't do anything to dissuade my opinion of her. An oldie, but a goody.

(and it doesn't hurt that she bears a striking resemblance to my wife...)

Bangoman, Desmond's breathy tone set him apart from most other sax players. No squeaks, squawks or farts, just nice tones. The only other I can think of who played like this (on tenor, not alto) was Ben Webster.

As for the quartet, I only saw them as a group the one time, but saw Brubeck several times after that, including once with David Benoit. (Amazingly, they worked well together.) Never got to see Joe Morello again, or Eugene Wright. The group was like a shooting star - brilliant, then gone.

Saw Maynard Ferguson around 1975 and thoroughly enjoyed listening to a big band live. I still have my late brother's Holton MF horn.

Umfaan...Sorry to hear about your brother. I went thru that some months ago...I am still suffering. I spoike to him every morning and every night! And we always slammed the phone down on each other and for what? Arguing over music, musicians, best concerts, best movies, best actors/actresses....Same thing we do LOL. Wish I could still slam the phone down on him....

Personally............I'll still take Joni Mitchell! LOL She is/was amazing. I often though a Joni M and Neil Y show would be PERFECT. I would kill for that one...They each do 30 min or so and then sing together for 45 min.

Steve, unfortunately I don't think that "dream" collaboration will ever happen.
You might recall that she had a brain anyuerism a few years ago.
I learned of her via my future ex wifes introducing me to Tom Rush/The Circle Game.

I can understand you continuing to be a fan of hers given both of your loves of Jazz.
Mingus, Pastorious,she stretched our musical boundaries.

Remember one thing about Joni - loose quote. ..No one ever came up to Van Gogh and said I love Starry Night man, can you paint another one. :-)

Neil...will always be Neil. Short of Trans ( pissed off, final album offering) He will always run in the lane that's made both him and us comfortable - loud,soft,thoughtful,angry.

🙂, Tool, have always loved these guys, had the good fortune to see them at lollapalooza at alpine alley and then again when they Christen'd...the Resch Center. These guys have a ton of energy and the crowd is insane. At the Resch, show was general admission, with the floor being no seats and the sides having seats....think smallish basketball arena.....we were glad we took the seats as when we looked at the floor it was basically one big flow of motion.....Maynard with his mullet and sweats, lol, anyway fast forward to 5,26 of the video and you'll see what I'm talking about-

Glad you enjoy them. I don't get it. Nirvana I understood, Sound Garden I understand, Pearl Jam I understand. They had great musicians and great front men...this band...just a bunch of Tools.
