Not making any excuse for Reed, but how is it different than, when in deep rough, a player repeatedly soles his club behind the ball....smashing the grass down with every soling? He was in a bunker where he could sole his club without penalty. I do understand he did move sand 2 times, but what if he had just soled the club several times to tamp down that same sand??
I, at first, had thought he knew what he was doing and was deliberate about it(cheating). After some thought about how the club would actually block his view of the 'swipes', from his stance over the club, I'll give him benefit of a doubt. His caddy must have been looking towards the fw, or looking at Reed directly, as caddies do, in order not to see it.
Much will be made of this, but should it? He is not President! 
Morning Drive dug up some footage from 2015 at this tourny showing Reed doing the EXACT same thing in a waste bunker. It appears to be a repeated pattern.
He shouldn't get any slack for this, imo.
I finally saw the video this morning and that was about as blatant as could be. I thought maybe he disturbed a few grains, but he clearly opened up a better path to his ball.
I'm not familiar with the facts involving his estrangement from his mother and father, so I'll refrain from opining about things I don't know to be true.
That said, he comes across as a smug, entitled prick much of the time and perhaps more troubling is that his reputation doesn't seem to bother him. This is just another example of why he has earned that reputation, and why it's so easy for some to assume that he's the villain regarding the situation with his parents.
Integrity is a very hard quality to recover once it has been abandoned.
Phil is becoming the new Greg Norman. Perhaps we'll see some chainsaw stunts where he severs half of his arm in future twitter posts, then two months later lands a world record great white shark from his modest 30 million dollar yacht in the pacific, and then gets an emergency beacon signal to return home to put out a blazing California wildfire single handedly.
He has to cheer hard. He's Captain America.

Johnson drove a par four and gagged on a 3' eagle putt to have the hole. Tiger was about the only one making putts. I guess Tiger will now get a beat down by Chamblee for his lack of skills as team Captain.
Looks like Webb Simpson gets babysitting duties this week being paired with Reed.
Not sure what to make of such a lopsided start. Not sure what to make of Tiger Woods contributing more as a player than he seems to be as a captain. If the US team loses, he's gonna be grilled for it regardless of how many points he earns for the cause. It always goes that way.
But it does make for a more compelling event when the International team changes the usual script and doesn't wave the white flag while shitting the bed right out of the gate.
This competition is hard to watch.
