Awesome link Rex, thanks! This guy explains it so well and his philosophy matches my bag. Driver to get in position. FW metal or hybrid to advance the ball. 5 irons and a putter for scoring. Modern hickory golf!

sdandrea1 The only drawback to this system is that it is dependent on nearly perfect(max) hits with each club. That said, I think I could do with only 7 clubs. But, I'm not walking, screw that. 😁

Gotta disagree. I've been immersed in this method for quite a while now and am nowhere near an excellent ball striker. I tend to club up on full shots and chip/putt my way to some of the best scores I've had this year. As long as my mishits stay in front of me, I can score.

Playing in a tournament this Sunday at Sun City Country Club. It's not a very long course so I've decided to take my short set, however I'm adding my 5w for some of those short par 4s.

Played Golden Bear at Indigo Run on HHI today with 7 clubs from 5500 yards. Had a steady day of ball striking and some good chips for one-putt pars. 39/40 for a 79. Course was in superb condition. On one hole I had 90 yard approach shot into a narrow green and wished I had a 48 degree club, but other than that, the 7 I carried were the right ones.

This appeals to me so much. What’s stopped me is a messed up shoulder that means carrying is a problem. I switched to my trolley and then it’s about as easy to take 14 clubs.
I think 8 clubs is ideal for carry.

7 - 8 works for me and the way I play but I hit some lower running shots into greens no forced carry.

Same here. I have to mod the bag for different courses. I can pull one of the 2 wedges and add a high lofted fw for courses with forced carry places. I have a 9 wood that goes between 135 to 150.

That's the beauty of it; swap clubs around to meet the course. I have three bags set up w/7 clubs each:
1) Datrek Bag: TM R7 9.5* driver, TM 22* hybrid, Bobby Jones 25H, Hogan CFT 7,9, Cleveland 56, Odyssey mallet.
2) Ping Bag: Cobra 10.5 * driver, Kenneth Smith laminate 5 wood, Hogan 5 iron 6, 8, & E, Spalding TPM putter.
3) Caddy Daddy Travel Bag: Master Grip 13* 3W, Ginty laminate 5W, Armour 5 HI, Bertha 7, 9, Spider 56*, Spalding HBA putter.

Sounds like my setups. I almost have 3 bags set as well, but only have 2 putters that I trust.

Roger that....I occasionally play my hickories too (7 clubs) in the ping bag. Otherwise they are on the wall in my office in a display rack. I walk every round, usually nine holes and prefer the feel of vintage spalding HBA and TPM to the new odyssey mallet. I bagged a Wilson 8813 blade for many years.

I played my local this week with five clubs: driver, 4h, 6, 8, putter and shot a 44 on nine holes / 3000 yards. Greens were terrible and I had the wrong putter or I believe I could have posted 41 or better. I'm not that great (14 handicapper) but have played a long time. I am marveling at how just the few correct clubs are all I need. Five is as low as I will go (and marginal too low for regular play) unless it is some goofball 3 club tourney, etc

Next time try putting with the 4H. That's what I do when I carry 5 clubs. I replace the missing putter with a wedge.
