LBlack14 I think Atticus actually makes a pretty good point. There is no obvious definition of "common sense" upon which everybody can agree.
Therefore, if we wanted to make play more convenient, and/or get rid of things that golfers find annoying (such as landing in a divot), the rules would have to be changed. And it would likely require more lengthy, TL-DR descriptions: for example, if we decide a ball can be dropped out a divot without a penalty stroke, then we all have to agree on what constitutes a divot.
Writing a rule book that covers all the bases without being overly complicated is a lot harder than most people think it is.
For my part, I think the "walk of shame" could be completely eliminated without changing the rules at all. If you hit a ball and think it might be out of bounds, just tee up another one and hit it. If the first one is IN bounds, play it and pick up the other one. If it is OUT of bounds, play the second ball hitting 4. It's not that complicated and it doesn't require slowing down play to go back to the tee.
