Whenever I go to look for my ball if I find it went OB or can't find it (and didn't suspect that from the tee box) I drop where I think I should have found it or where I suspect it went OB and play from there w/a 2 stroke penalty. I think most of the time I end up with whatever score I would have if I would have re-teed. Saves a trip back to the tee box and helps keep things moving along. This usually happens on courses I am not that familiar with.

Yes, I have done the same for the reasons you stated.

I do something similar with my junior golfers. They walk and finish in 2:15-2:20.

If a USGA event and they mispronounce your name, they should double your winnings.

Also, if you have 5 minutes to look for a lost ball they PGA/USGA should have 10 minutes from the time of the infraction to reach a decision and notify the player.

The principle served by "stroke-drop-move along" is not present with an ob or lost ball. In the case of a water hazard for example, the stroke is intended to duplicate a "recovery stroke." IOW, if you could, you would chip the ball out of the difficulty and continue play. That works because you are allowed to play a ball from a water hazard, if you could, because the ball is on the course. You are allowed to drop to pretend like you are playing a recovery stroke. However, you cannot play an ob ball because the ball must be on the course in order to play it. So, there really isn't a recovery stroke from ob to be duplicated, you have to go back to the previous location and try again. (The inability for a recovery stroke for a lost ball should be self evident.) I am not sure this is adequately explained, I will elaborate if necess.

Plus 1 - Slow play is a one of the reasons people lose interest in the game. Anything that speeds up play is a good idea.

What good is the cap anyway for the average player? So you can scam a few bucks off your buddy? or sandbag at a tourney?
I am a bogie golfer. I can shoot 90 on a 6600 slope 125 course. I am NOT going to go retee. and I'm better than 90% of the recreational golfers out there. I don't give a rats ass about a handicap. like Spuzz said, if I see a guy coming back to retee, he is gonna get the gears from EVERYBODY.

My regular group plays it as: lost ball, OB or in the water - if it's from the tee it is 1 in, 2 out, hitting 3 and so on. We have a choice to hit a provisional from tee if the course is not crowded, if crowded just move on and drop. If the USGA doesn't like our adjustments to the rules then they can pay our greens fees. We are playing for fun and maybe a beer or ten bucks, not making our living out there. We have made what we consider to resonable changes to the rules-of-golf to speed the game and keep it enjoyable and all 12 of us are all agreed to the rules adjustments.

"The rules of golf" in many cases are pure nonsense. Common sense should be used, for the weekend hack, but I haven't seen much of that displayed on the course, as of late, either. Most lose any trace of it as soon as they pick up a club, unfortunately. It's disheartening.

I know him well and hackers is inferred.
Also, here in Canada (same as Candu) I have never had a guy in the group in front of me come back to the tee box after an OB. My old foursome would have clubbed him, if he managed to avoid the hailstorm on the way back.
Handicaps, for the weekend only guys, are 95% pure vanity caps and I have rarely seen anybody playing by "the rules of golf" around here. The overwhelming majority are out for fun and a decent pace of play is part of that.
Of course there are exceptions, but the weekender/public golfer is not one of them, imo.

There is a supposed true story where a usga rules official was a walk on in some club.. He was teamed with a group of locals who said: "we know you're a rules guy but we don't play by strict rules in this group." They all teed off and the rules guy landed in a bunker. when they got to his ball he took it and tossed it out of the bunker on the fairway."Wait a minute" they said "you can't do that." He said, "Oh I thought you did not play by the strict rules."

Different philosophy over here. Saturdays are almost exclusively competitions (tournaments) and Sunday mornings ROG match play.
