Sarnella Actually it was a Civil Defense employee who pushed the wrong button when he got from his station at the end of his shift. Took them 38 min. to discover the screw-up.

If you want an account of what it was like to go through this, read the article running in Sunday's local paper about a Topeka couple vacationing on Maui and the actions they took, along with what was going thru their minds. I'm acquainted with this couple and my wife works with Dr. Voth so it hits pretty close to home. Close your eyes after reading it, and give some thought to what might have been in your thoughts and prayers and conversations with your loved ones during and after. Compelling story.

puttnfool Yep, just ridiculous. Freakin' federal employees can't do anything right!

You really, seriously can't help yourself can you? Always looking to start a fight.

I find it hard to believe that one civil defense employee has the
authority to throw a wrong switch and scare the the hell out of
      everyone.

sdandrea1 I'll let that one slide. Without knowing that I'm a federal employee, you couldn't have possibly sensed the sarcasm.

Giving no thought to the other federal employees you insult? You're letting one slide? I learned to ignore Toulon, I guess I can put you out of my misery as well.

Not worked up. Your posts are inconsequential to me. I just find them trifling, constantly argumentative, and trolling for dissension. Please stop or get some help.

I have a work buddy who was in Hawaii for the first time ever with all of his family for a friends wedding.

He texted a group of us from work saying he was woken up by the alert. He didn't get into it on text what they were feeling or what they did, but I will find out tomorrow when we are back to work.

sdandrea1 if they're truly inconsequential, then you and your two buddies wouldn't be hunting them down and replying to them all the time. I'm sorry if you three (and some others here) were born with out a sarcasm detector, but it can be developed if you try really hard.

On the other hand, you could just try not being so thin skinned and letting everything bother you.

Talked to my buddy. His whole family got the notification and figured since they were on an island, where were they going to go?
Instead, they called their one daughter who was in Oregon to let her know where in the house the paperwork was that she would need for insurance and such, to get the house paid for so she could live there forever. They then went to the in-law's hotel room and all spent time together, waiting it out until they got the all-clear. Figuring that if they were going out, they would go out together.

SVonhof This makes pretty good sense. If a missile really were coming, you couldn't really go anywhere.

rsvman I read Jordan Spieth's caddie took off toward the other side of the island. Given my knowledge of the island and from past experience, I'd say if you could get a jump on traffic, that might be the safest place to be. If a missile was deliberately launched at Oahu, it would likely be aimed at the Honolulu/Waikiki area. There's a whole mountain range in between there and Kaneohe Bay on the other side of the island. If it was a nuke, you'd still die from radiation, but if it wasn't a nuke you'd stand a chance against the initial blast.

puttnfool - there is large military base (Marine Corp Base Hawaii) that would be a juicy target on the other side of the island. I've been on that base at night during 'take cover' drills with all the lights on base dark. That will get your heart pumping.
