Well, one wet round in the books with these wedges, and here are some initial thoughts...
Fugly factor, yes they are not the prettiest to look from the sole and back cavity position when in the golf bag compared to a traditional wedge. Based on the looks from the sole, they do look like an infomercial wedge (c3i, xe1). Having said that, when looking from the address position, they look beautiful (which is what is important). I loved the lighter chrome color and combined with the moderate topline and compact shape, they look really nice! I was in the golf store the other day drooling over the Ping i200s and these OMG wedges looked very similar at address. Despite the wide sole, you cannot see any of the cavity in the normal address position unless you purposely de-loft. One thing I should mention, I am wondering about the quality control of these wedges. I remember hearing that these wedges were heavy not sure of the specs but I'm guessing the weights were a bit off in my wedges - the 56 deg head was at 308gram and the 52 was at 312 grams. I know typically sand wedges are around 300 grams, so even if these are supposed to be heavier, the 52 would likely be a bit lighter than the 56 normally right, unless they were designed to be the same headweight? Not a big deal though as I am not that sensitive to headweight.
Performance - I do the majority of chipping around the green with my sand wedge and generally only use my gap or PW if I need to hit a longer/lower chip or don't feel comfortable with the lie. I would say overall, I was quite impressed with the 56 deg chipping. I chunked a few chips but this is normal for me, especially in the wetter course conditions but overall had a better round than my previous round with my glide wedges. Whether it was all me or the OMG wedges saved me a couple of times where the glides didn't, I am not sure - more time needed. I couldn't really gauge spin and check as I was using mostly distance balls and with wet fairways and greens, roll is limited anyways. Again, more time is needed but I am encouraged as there were a couple chips where the ball seemed to stop a bit sooner than I expected. I believe I only had a handful of full wedge shots during my round, just one of those days where I either had lots of 9 irons and PW or shots less than 80 yards into the green so not a lot of full gap and sand wedges. Of the ones that I did have, I unfortunately pulled a few of them left but this may have also been the shafts. I was using some apollo shafts and wonder if I didn't trim them enough especially considering the extra weight of these wedges. If I'm not careful, I tend to pull my wedges anyways, so I'm sure it was a combination of this and maybe a shaft that was a bit soft and not really anything to do with the heads themselves. I did have a few shots 3/4 shots in the 70-80 yard range and they worked out perfect. Again, looking down at them, they look great and they performed perfectly aside from the pulled shots - contact and distance were good on the pulled shots, just bad direction. I guess the only thing that I didn't like was remembering to remove the mud from the soles, especially after a practice shot. Usually, you just need to give the faces a quick wipe but with these you have to do a bit more work with the removal as the dirt stays in the rails in the sole. Probably only a problem in wetter conditions, but still, a bit of a PITA but oh well, as long as they perform, I don't mind.
So that's about it! Overall, a great wedge with encouraging results. I love my ping glides but would not be surprised if these guys replace them. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend these at all as they performed for me in the wet conditions of vancouver, bc. After, I have a few more rounds I'll post an updated review. I am also very interested to see how they perform in the dry, summer conditions but this will have to wait for a while ☹
