jsippy73 back in 1973 and 74, drove a yellow cab in Chgo (mainly in the summer). The bulletproof glass between me and the passenger will attest to how safe it was.
As a sidenote to gun laws, fireworks were and still are illegal in Chicago. As an 11yr old, had no problem buying them.

Toronto tate per 100k: 1.73

Access to firearms seems to be the difference. Can't be just the people since Toronto has some of the same issues as other urban centers.
We have some rough areas but nothing like you guys have in your cities.
