glebert I have a Golfworks screw type puller that for some reason can't get enough clamping force on the shaft, it always creeps. I got so sick of fighting it I took a 2x2 that was about 2 feet long and cut a slot it in that the shaft would just slip into and then pushed the head off with my feet. Can't get much cheaper than that.
Mind if I ask what color of cushion did you use to sit on , when using your feet to push the 2x2 ?
BTW, I think Par4QC had mentioned it once in the old forum to use a piece of bicycle inner tube to wrap the jaws of the clamp. Real rubber has more friction for grabbing the shafts.
