Shaft Puller

I am looking for a cheap shaft puller/extractor and ran across this one on ebay.

Has anyone used one? Is it worth it or do I need to spend more for something better? I am not planning on pulling many shafts but do so from time to time. Thanks!

Never used that one. From the pictures, you'd better have something to catch the head when it spring loose from the device, like a large cardboard box lined with old towels.

Well, if you were looking for "cheap" you found it. There is a diff between inexpensive and cheap. That has to be one of the worst shaft pullers I have ever seen. The yoke at the hosel and the angle bracket are very light weight. For steel shafts you don't need a shaft puller, just a rubber clamp and a vice. Heat the hosel and start twisting. Graphite shafts are totally different. Bend a hot graphite shaft during a pull and the shaft is toast.

I haven't kept up with what is available with shaft pullers these days. I have an old JB's hydraulic that works great. I think there was an old adage on FGI that said to buy the best shaft puller that you can afford. If you plan to pull one you will end up doing many others. And all it takes is buggering up one expensive wood head to make you wish you have spent a bit more up front. There is only one review on that puller but you might want to read it.

I could not agree more with @Rickochet . I always stayed away from the cheapies. I used my JB's Pro for years and pulled hundreds and hundreds of shafts. Spend the extra money (I know, it's not my money though). 🙂

I was getting ready to build one of those when I ran across the used JB. I think 123punt was Rex's brother.
And what was all the stink over the JB? Didn't he get into some kind of BS patent right infringement issue so he quit making them and the one who filed the suit never made another one either?

Rickochet Rick, that guy never made any pullers, that I know of! He has patents on a lot of things he's never made. He is the guy with the .....damn, the name escapes me.....but that computerized shaft alignment system that costs $50/per.

I had thought of building pullers myself, but just no time for it until I retire.

There is only 1 on the market(similar to the J😎, last I checked, and I hadn't checked in several months. There was a "Robert's" brand on Ebay, and also 1 from RJs. The RJs looks like a pain in the ass what with having to remove bolts to lock in the shaft; which can never be a good thing.

Rex I am still using the shaft lever clamp you sent me years ago. Not sure if you made it or your brother but what a nice item. It also reminds me of how informative the old FGI Clubmakers forum was.

Rickochet Yeah, I made those. Still use mine when regripping, with the original rubber. I've still got a few clamps around, and the bases, but again, no time for that stuff right now. I've got a list of things I'm going to make, when 'the day' comes. I don't even make the spine finder any more.

Pic 1 shows the clamp. What ever material you put in the clamp face is working great after 5 years.

Pic 2 I guess is the 123put puller which looks very similar to the JB I have.

Great products. Rex, I think there is a market for these if you ever get the time or desire to make them.

OP,did you bother to read the raving 1 star review?

Buyer beware
This is a piece of junk it's instructions all but tell you it's not going to work very well and the items that come with it are garage quality at best. I tried to follow the instructions and destroyed the finish on a $300 Taylormade Superfast which cost me dearly because it wasn't mine I was fixing it for a customer and had no choice but replace it.

You're better off using something like this if you only plan on doing a few clubs.

check the local Craigslist ads to see if you can do better.

SVonhof I think that fella was a former FGI member also. They started out around $49. Then, inflation sets in.

That one should work well except the bolted down shaft clam is not user friendly and often could not hold the shaft securely in place, needing to tighten down several times during the process.

It'll work for hobbyist.

I think I still have one somewhere.

I have a Golfworks screw type puller that for some reason can't get enough clamping force on the shaft, it always creeps. I got so sick of fighting it I took a 2x2 that was about 2 feet long and cut a slot it in that the shaft would just slip into and then pushed the head off with my feet. Can't get much cheaper than that.

Mind if I ask what color of cushion did you use to sit on , when using your feet to push the 2x2 ?
BTW, I think Par4QC had mentioned it once in the old forum to use a piece of bicycle inner tube to wrap the jaws of the clamp. Real rubber has more friction for grabbing the shafts.
