Hitting the Driver

Par4QC Why do people hit with a negative AoA? And how is that negative AoA even achieved?

For me, I think I've always hit with a bit of a negative angle of attack. When I was young my drives would
take off low to mid and then would climb like a plane on takeoff. Now, being an old duffer, I no longer have
enough head speed to do that but I still mostly have a negative angle of attack. When I try to overcome that
I quite often hit the top of the ball and dribble it off the tee, so I quit trying.

Typhoon so, it's best to use both, and average the information??

You have a choice play one swing for all clubs or have two distinctly different swings one for driver and another for the other clubs. Most players don't think much about that. These swing differences with head size, tee height, ball position change your AofA so you can be positive or negative and change your launch angle. I am talking golf here not LDA.

scotts33 I know I have 2 swings, but I don’t think about it like you said. My irons I hit down, my driver is 4-5 degrees up. I was always maximizing my swing for LDA but keeping my mechanics so I could take it to the course.

For the majority of recreational golfers mastering one swing is hard enough. This is why other than too long of a playing length by major brands 45.50"s it makes driver impossible to keep straight for hacks. The 2 swings is one of the biggest reasons hacks suck off the tee. Mainly because hacks don't even understand what's going on but just keep seeing tee the ball way up and hit up on it. Ugly. 😆

scotts33 Yeah they swing for the fences with an off balance swing with the driver … and then decelerate with the iron swing.

Because Rory already has massive club head speed with driver, he's trying to hit more fairways with shorter playing length. I heard he went down a 1/2"? BUT if you can't stay in the fairway 65%+ of the time with driver depending on width of fairway then shorter length makes sense.

If you are an LPGA player with great hand eye you play longer playing length driver to gain distance with draw ball flight and not miss fairways. How many of us hacks are that good? 😉

It's the other way around, Rory shortened his driver after I did and gained 10-15 yards with it.

rsvman2 I have no doubt that the majority would hit driver farther if they hit slightly up.

Or get a driver with a loft that suits your swing. Another thing I told Rory and my many followers: higher loft often results in more distance.

Par4QC what averages? I showed Koepka hit down on driver, that's not an average. You saw Rory is hitting a short driver, that's not an average. I listed other guys hitting down or shorter drivers, those aren't averages.
You said pros don't hit down, if they AVERAGE 1* down obviously some hit down.
Say it with me, you can do it, c'mon, one word at a time... I WAS WRONG.
