No arguments here. Agree wholeheartedly with your assessment on Comp vs OE drivers. There are still a number of component irons I would and might play
I played my best golf ever with a cheap, woods and irons in a box set that I bought complete for $199 in 1986. I believe they were called Dynatour Open. This was when I started golfing ( only ever played the game maybe 3-4 times before and that was sharing using my friends set on the course when they allowed such )
this was the first set I ever bought and went from a beginner to single digit handicap after 2 seasons and played that set for 4 years ( played the laminated 3/5 woods forever....still have the 5w).
After that switched to TA845 irons then Used the first set of components I ever built ( Turbo Power 320 with Harrison Professional stepless steel shafts and GP Softie grips) they could have been the best set I ever played with. 🙂
After that , in the FGI hay days, I played everything and it wasn't uncommon for me to have 15 sets of irons and 20-30 drivers in play, in a season lol. Of course my game got worse without the consistency.
Played the Wishon 560mc with Accra Tour Steel for many seasons and absolutely loved them.
Nowadays, while I do have a few component clubs that see some play . I am 100 % OEM and typically play a set of irons for 2-3 seasons and a driver about the same, although My G400 Max
lasted quite a while but that could arguably be the best driver ever made. My Bag in Phoenix has a couple component woods in it.
I buy cheaply and don't ( either with the discount I get through work dealer cost plus 10% or pick up a trade in set off my pro for a steal) .....don't typically lose money when I flip. Bought my ap1's new for $600, played them 3 seasons and just sold them last month for $700
