What happened to Pebble Beach?

Culturally it’s different in many ways today entertainment wise, for me anyway. For one I couldn’t name one song from any of todays top artists. Maybe because there’s no more top 40 on the radio.
We used to go to the old Outback Pro Am on the Champions Tour in Tampa. It was fun seeing some of the celebrities play golf like Keven Kostner, Mark Wahlberg, George Lopez and Bill Murray. A few are very good golfers like Vince Gill and Huey Lewis.
Several sports stars played as well like Jerry Rice, Boomer Esiason , Joe Theismann, Lou Pinella and some Buccaneer players. Plus most of the top Champion Tour players and former greats played in it. A guy I played golf with at the time caddied for the head of NBC Sports (nice guy). So we got to walk with them for a few holes. Always a great tournament. Sorry to see it go.
Went to a celebrity Pro Am on Cape Cod back about 20 years ago. My nephew was supposed to be the walking scorer for Annika. We got there late and his choice from what was left was Skip Kendall, Glen Day and Bill Glasson. He chose Glasson. Glasson's celebrity partner was Red Sox knuckleballer Tim Wakefield. Wakefield could smoke the ball.
Got to walk inside the ropes which was fun. Funny story. The caddie for Glasson once his score got to be 4 over said to my nephew, 'don't go past 4 over, we're not here to embarrass anyone.' lol
I’ll be honest. I’ve never cared for watching celebrities and athletes other than pro golfers play. I enjoy the scenery there, the history they often talk about and root for Jordan Speith climbing the leaderboard
I try to stay somewhat current with pop culture but it’s difficult these days. Everything is too compartmentalized. I think back to a movie like The Godfather and you had Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert Duvall, James Caan , all big time celebrities in one movie. Guys like Robert Dinero, Dustin Hoffman, Robert Redford, Paul Newman, I can go on and on. I left out 25 more and didn’t even get to the females. You can’t come up with that kind of roster today unless you spend an hour googling. Don’t get me started on music. Over the holidays some of my guests and I where debating the biggest pop culture icons of all time. Weather you like them of not you would have to say Elvis and Marilyn Monroe. You can go to Home Depot an find an Elvis or Marilyn tree ornament. That’s timeless.
Famous for being famous.
Wilmington Delaware is not a big city but we have a decent music venues. They never get A list acts , more up and comers and oldies. The biggest draws they get seem to be good traveling tribute bands.
This is the Golfbuzziest discussion of the new year. I love how it went in so many directions so quickly, and all of them curmudgeonly.
colej That’s awesome he seems like a great guy.
azgreg All I ever see is Larry the cable Guy and some unknown comedian who they get to tell an unfunny joke between holes, some bigwig execs who nobody cares about and Murray. Frankly, Murrays' act is just old by now. But admittedly I haven't watched it much in recent years. Ray Romano is basically Larry the cable Guy. The rest of your list I'd be interested in seeing.
Yep. Took it right out of Bubba’s hands - but he was a class act running to congratulate him on the win.
Jordan Spieth is what's happening at Pebble Beach right now. One stroke lead heading into 16-17-18, three really good holes.
mikeintopeka Jordan Spieth is what's happening at Pebble Beach right now.
With any luck. He needs this confidence building win.
I'm watching. Pretty good stuff going on.
Ouch.....
