As Yogi Berra once said, "it's like deja vu all over again."

In 2005, (then) 36-yr-old Brett Favre wasn't exactly enamored with the Packers' 24th pick in the draft (QB Aaron Rodgers). Fifteen years later, 36-yr-old Aaron Rodgers wasn't exactly enamored with the Packers' 26th pick in the 2020 draft (QB Jordan Love). The gist of the storyline, per ESPN:

"The Packers have faced criticism for not only taking a quarterback when Rodgers has four years left on his contract, but also for not doing more to upgrade the offense around Rodgers. In a draft where a record 36 receivers were taken, the Packers took none despite coming within a game of the Super Bowl last season under first-year coach Matt LaFleur."

Favre knows what this feels like, and equated his final years in Green Bay as that of a hornet's nest. Favre and Rodgers' history has been well chronicled over the years... Jeff Pearlman's "Gunslinger" went deep in describing a very tense, standoffish relationship between Favre and his looming replacement, as well as the tone deafness with which Favre dealt with coaches and management. How that all went down makes for good reading if you're into the nasty bits and juicy pieces, but in the end it became an unavoidable spectacle: The ego of an aging star QB past his prime, and management/coaching staff wanting to completely shift gears and begin a new era.

Rodgers doesn't appear to be past his prime, not yet. But at age 36, with few weapons on offense and a promising young quarterback waiting in the wings, perhaps he can now better relate to what occurred 15 years earlier with the guy he was replacing. As for Rodgers not finishing his career in Green Bay... it remains to be seen. Can he stay healthy? Will it even matter if he doesn't have skill players around him on offense? It didn't seem to matter that much last year, considering how deep they went into the playoffs. But Aaron's on the clock and he knows it. He doesn't have another extended rebuilding process to play with. He wants to win now, and who could possibly blame him.

Familiar story. It'll be interesting to see how this unfolds this season, if we have a season that is.
