Putter grip replacement for the first time

Since most of golf stores are not fully opened, I thought I might try to change my putter grip myself.
I never did any clubmaking before and this will be my first time.
I read may are using air compressor but I don't own one.
As a first timer, is it fine to just get grip kit from Golfworks or Amazon and just try it?
Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

Sure, go for it. Assuming you can clamp the shaft safely in a vise, cut the old grip off with a razor blade knife. Clean off the old tape. Re-tape if you want with the tape in the kit. I no longer use grip tape as I have found they install easier without it, they stick in place just fine and they're easier to remove without tape. Use plenty of mineral spirits to lubricate both the shaft (tape) and the inside of the grip. Slide it on! Make sure you eyeball and adjust the alignment right away.

The biggest issue is correct alignment. Discount golf stores miss align putter grips the majority of the time. Steve's advice is good. I use new tape each and every time after removing tape. Inside butt diameter of various putter grips and outside butt diameter of various putter shafts can be different so using tape make sure putter grip doesn't move.

Especially if it is a flat sided grip. A funny story I have about a golf bud who asked me to install a flat sided grip. I hate doign stuff for him because there is always something wrong when I finished. Sure enough after I put the grip on he complained about it being out of alignment. I took it back off and redid it. He said it was still of a couple of degrees. I took it off and did it the third time. This time I trued the club face up in my vice to 90.00° on my digital level placed against the face. Next I put it on the flat part of the grip and adjusted it until it read 0.00°. I took the club to him and he said it was still off. I showed him the pics on my phone. What a jerk.

Tape will ensure a good long lasting fit. I don't use it anymore and have had good results, but Scotts33 makes a good point too. Use PLENTY of mineral spirits with or without tape. Using an air compressor along with a grip installing tool makes everything easier, but if you use plenty of lubrication, you can slide it on without compressed air. Been working fine for decades!

If you don't want to buy a roll of tape. If you have a place of business that installs grips just call and ask if you can purchase a few strips of 2 sided tape locally. I have had hobbyists call me and ask for same and I happy to help. The Pay It Forward kind of thing.

Rickochet it is a pain in the ass to get them right, if you are a person who is going to be bothered, then pay for it. A half hour of my time and my supplies ain't free to jerks.

Funny to me, but the only time my eyes see or care about the alignment of a grip is when I am putting one on. Afterwards, the only eyes I have towards a grip have been replaced by my hands ... for the life of that grip.
