I like a challenge, but hate courses that can penalize you for what seems like a good shot.
Examples -
One of the RTJ Trail courses in Prattville (probably The Judge, but maybe The Senator). There was a short par 4 that I striped a 3 iron right down the middle of the fairway on.... we never found the ball. My entire foursome was baffled.
Best guess was the crowned fairway led into swamp on both sides and just would not hold a ball. That felt like a kick in the nuts.
Grand Cypress in Orlando, on the 'new' course they built. Seemingly random fairway pot bunkers on a few holes that make the drive seem like a crap shoot. There is no correct 'line' to take - just whack the ball and hope for the best. That just seems too random for enjoyment.
I love my home course (Persimmon Woods). There are difficult holes, but they do not depend upon random events or luck. If you cannot hit a good drive, the par 4 9th is going to play like a par 5. If you cannot hit a draw, the par 4 10th becomes a long hole as well. But there are short par 4s that do not require a driver - we have variety. The only 'forced carries' are short shots over water - one on a short par 3, the approach on a short par 4, and the approach to the par 5 18th. There is what some seem to think is a forced carry off the tee on the par 5 11th - however, its only a creek and there is fairway available to lay up. Its just a blow to their ego to have to lay up π
