The more I think about it, the more I agree with you. Getting the Jets defense back on the field was not the wrong play. After all, it was their defense that won them the game.
Plus, I wouldn't want to be Robert Saleh Monday morning had they not taken the TD, only to wind the clock down and then having the FG kicker shank one off the post for the loss.
