"Big" Grips

"Big" meaning anything larger than standard.

I'm a sweeper, more or less, and have always had the stupid 'laying the sod over' routine, hitting behind the ball tons more than just 'sweeping' it; mainly the reason for my bag having a lot of headcovers in it(hybrids). And, I've always used standard size grips. Shafts have been either, steel, graphite.

I recently got a new set of Apex 21 irons on a steal deal. They came new as can be, with Recoil Dart 75 shafts, F2(sr. flex). What wasn't mentioned was the midsize GP MCC +4 grips. They do feel like logs, but fit the hands perfectly, as indicated by 'experts'. Specs are 2* flat, and +1/2" for the clubs.

I'm killing this set of irons! Not hitting behind the ball, no 'rights' no 'lefts', just dead straight shots every time. WTF??
I've used graphite shafts plenty; I set my irons at 2* flat, +1/2" all the time. I've hit forged irons a lot, although these are smaller heads.
The only diff is I've never really tried the midsize grips, except on a SW. (which now, after writing this, I realize has been a deadly weapon, esp. from +/- 30 yds. .)

Could the grip have been the culprit for my non-famous game? For not allowing me to have the career we all dream of?🤣

Yes.

You may be sensitive to grip size. Makes a world of difference for me - only smaller ones.
Oh....the Apex 21 irons are +++++.

I don't buy it Rex. Grip size is important but going from a "fat" golfer to a taking divots in front of the ball which I assume you are doing with this set is more the sole of the iron than anything (turf interaction-sweeper)(especially now in the dead of summer with dried out turf) add smaller size makes you concentrate more plus the senior shaft is very flexible. UST rates them for seniors with 180-215 driver carry. I say it's the 2nd shaft balance point-weight and the 1st sole turf interaction mainly sole. Grip 3rd. Just my take.

scotts33 Well, that was eye opening! Just checked the soles, compared to the other sets I've been using. Can't believe I overlooked that point, but did notice last round that the leading edge of the AW was similar to a wedge grind(bevel?). All of them have a slightly similar design. My other sets, all just flat soles/leading edges.

The bigger grips sure do make it easier to swing the clubs though.😉

Very little. 7i= 3.05. My TM Sim Max 7i= 4.2.

That is the #1 fitting factor (sole design-type of turf and predictable lie-golfers swing AofA) by the majority of all golfers! Good you know that. Most go from one set to the next iron head design and wonder why? ☺

Major brands overlook this in a big way as do so called professional indoor fitters who never see the player being fit off grass-turf just mats huge mistake IMO. Grass does NOT lie mats do! 😎

Eguller Yeah, if I continue to hit them like this, I won't make the same mistake I made with my Rogues over the winter. They were gold, and I let my inner HO get the best of me.

At least we've gotten away from that Army cadence in ball flights. 😉
Now, to get the distances dialed in so I know what's what & when.

See Alpha RX-1 and RX-2 beveled leading edge other designs have this. It's also about the width of the sole. Pickers like me who grew up in the early 60's before widely used irrigation in fairways learned to play picking the ball as you could not go down into the dried out turf without injury. Narrow width blades were the prevalent design back then and for that reason. Think Tom Watson in KC dried out tight lie turf or Trevino in TX. One reason Tom always did well on the dried out links turf in THE BRITISH OPEN as it was called back then. ☺

scotts33 Apex vs. Sim Max. Tried to get the shadow cast correctly on the leading edge of that Apex. It's not as far over(centered) as it came out, but you can see the big difference of the soles, and the size. Not as pronounced, or centered, as on the TF Tour 2000, or recent Srixon heads.

Left to right all 7i's. Alpha RX-2 medium size players CB low offset medium sole, Alpha RX-1 large CB mid to high hdcp more offset wider sole, Alpha VX medium size high tech flex face CB medium sole, Alpha C2 Fly Forged CB wider sole with offset. Note all 4 have beveled leading edge VX not as much.

BTW Rex on grip size. Large diameter size in butt of grip may make you want to grasp butt of club with last 3 fingers of top hand more. That's an old Trevino tip to stop casting which therefore allows you to keep lag and not hit behind ball (casting-extend length of club making it longer). Sound possible?

Already was doing that, but these grips also are the bigger lower hand type. That, imo, is what is making the difference. Swing feels more equalized, side to side. Not so much more power just coming from the right hand. And, it's an easier swing. Not so much grip pressure; I can feel that in my forearms now.

Manuel De La Torre used to say to me Scott I don't care if your grip is strong, neutral or in between the two hands together have to equalize. They work in unison. So you can't have a weak top hand and a strong bottom hand <-----We see that kind of grip a LOT day in day out with higher hdcp. golfers. It "feels" comfortable to lot of golfers but attached to the club that way it's recipe for disaster and lots of frustration.

I like the thought equalized side to side.

I've always had a lot of left hits, esp. with irons/hybrids, shorter clubs. But, when I've tried to weaken the right hand, they flare right. With these grips, straight. Hopefully after 2 rounds, it's not honeymooning. I'm going to try some on hybrids now.
Gotta get this shit figured out before I get old. 😉

scotts33 I like to have beginners grip a yardstick. It’s pretty close to a great golf grip

The rounded sole is a winner for me too. Too sharp and I get pelts. Bigger grips are great too, but that’s really more about comfort.
