KCee same here, I went all over the board and what I found was
1) I can gain some strokes in the long irons if I played SGI, but I lose them right back in the short irons. That’s important, because I don’t hit long irons much at all. So I have to focus on that end of the spectrum more.
2) I have a real hard time flighting the big shovels down and I already hit the ball very high, so it becomes super unpredictable in the wind.
3) real thin soles are not for me, I get steep and take pelts and I might as well give up in wet/soft conditions. That said, I shot my best 9 hole round ever with a set of blades, but I think that was more the exception than the rule.
4) Apparently, I sit in that pain in the ass middle ground of not consistent enough to go to players clubs, I have a little too much club speed for 98% of SGI clubs to work well, there are just not a lot of clubs with a reasonable weighting for my needs to control the flight, without being razor thin soles. The XHP, AP2, and the MC560 was ok are about the best solutions I found.
5) my interest in single length carries on because of my ability to still get distance at the top and and some of the designs fall in that, not obnoxious GI range, without going too far. The Pinhawk design is a little big to my eye, but I crush that 5 iron I built, better than pretty much anything I have ever owned. My 2 complaints, I wanted to be able to go a little shorter with the short irons and go towards a dual length set, which they kinda did, but it got too SGI for me. Also, the 5 iron goes 203 when struck perfectly, it goes 203 when I absolutely try to kill it and hit it right or 203 when I hit it well on a normal shot.. I cannot for the life of me stretch distance out of it, drives me insane. My normal 5 iron is good for about 225, so it’s a pretty big compaction at the top of the bag. Yes, I know 203 sounds WRX-ish, but I have tried 205, over the water, all too many times now, and it won’t do it 😂, so in conclusion it’s 203, tops.
