Golf and pain, or No Golf and no pain

When I'm golfing, I have to live with mild pain and discomfort all the time. Mostly foot and neck. The neck leads to headaches though. When I stop golfing...

DonM, I was on Mizuno MP67 with DG S300 shafts before my shoulder went crap, and was still trying to use them after op/rehab. It was clear they weren't working for me so had a Trackman fitting session with my club pro, tried Mizuno JPX919 and new Srixon range, not much better.

Tried Taylor Made Sim Max OS , KBS (Max?) 85 in regular. Swing speed went up 5mph within a couple of swings and distance (Trackman) by 15 yards. Very fast off the clubface (for me), good launch angle and spin rates I can live with.

I've got a few rounds in with them now and, while still getting used to them and ironing out my inconsistencies - partly down to not being able to play regularly if at all - they're a world apart for me from the MP67s.

I never imagined using "old man's cheat sticks" but when pain, injury, and/or aging took most of the fun out of golf something had to give.

I feel your pain, literally.
I've ate IBs and 5/325 vicodin forever. I used to eat IBs like candy when I played a shit ton of softball, 800mg at a time, multiple times a day. Lucky I never had kidney issues, I think. I don't take them anymore, only the vics, as needed. Sad thing is, not much time through the day and night that I don't. Take one before I try to sleep and 1 in the morning. Pain dictates how many through the day. I can go days without, at times, but when I'm working, 1 in the morning and sometimes 1 at lunch, not always. Like I said, depends on what I'm doing. Definitely when I play golf!

Don---Read Positive Impact Golf that will change you from a hitter to a swinger. I thought from seeing your garage videos and single plane swing you gave it the business much more hitter like. To change it takes a whole hell of a lot of mindset change. Example pick up your left heel that's foreign to players that have always used lower body resistance and all the maladies that come with that kind of swing. Think Bobby Jones or any of the old timers. Snead etal.

OK, so now I have not golfed for 2 or 3 weeks, and my neck feels as good as it can feel.
See my dilemma?

I've realized that (I think) the problem is that the upper trap is stretched and weak. And so it's vulnerable to injury. So I'm going to try to fix that. I am going in for a checkup and might start by getting an RX for PT. Won't be the first PT sessions I've had for the neck, but maybe this time I can push for trying my idea and see what happens. I need to find someone who knows how to strengthen my traps without hurting them.

Of course there are videos on youtube that directly contradict each other. 🙂

Found this with a quick search. They have gentle exercises, some stretches, and some yoga poses to help with the traps. Just something else to check out and maybe get ideas from.

if you plan on, or think you’ll have surgery in the near future do not do the cortisone.

Please do go to someone who will help you strengthen your neck and shoulders. Don’t give up doing what you love doing.

colej My GP is against cortisone and has explained why. I'm looking into MAT, muscle activation techniques. Looks like I'll have to drive an hour to get into it.

My wife has a knee that is bone on bone. She is on Medicare, and apparently to follow their protocols, the first thing is to try a cortisone shot. We got the impression that if you want to end up with a Medicare paid knee replacement, the cortisone shot must be tried first.

I have wracked my brain trying to think of hobbies that I could do to replace golf, that involve getting outdoor activity. Mostly coming up blank. Don't like hunting or fishing any more. I like photography but not enough to do it all the time. My shoulder won't work for tennis. It might work for pickleball. I don't live in a hiking area. Etc etc. I expect I'll find a way to golf, involving easy swings with high loft fairway woods.

Cortisone is bad, but the knee is bad to begin with, so. But, it won't help much, just kill the pain for a spell. Much better to get what my wife's doctor called a 'chicken injection'....hyaluronic acid. It coats the bone and creates less friction, thus much less pain. It can only be done every 6 months, but lasts quite a while, and works. My wife has had both knees done, so she's well versed in the pain/treatment of bone on bone.

I know you’re retired but do you still drive much? What about sitting at a desk? Just thinking of if your posture could be effecting your neck as well?

colej Oh I have had a lifetime of bad neck posture. I work on it, but to some extent it's built in now. However if I'm not golfing, I don't have pain unless/until I do some kind of overhead work, lifting, etc. But golfing sets it off.

mikeintopeka Is there hiking in North Texas? All I've seen in my two brief visits is subdivisions and clogged roads.

DonM - walking/hiking in and around Rock Creek Resort is one of the selling points. Being a gated resort, it substantially reduces traffic on their well-maintained roads that wind through the complex down to Lake Texoma without leaving the 'hood'. A lot of elevation changes with tree-lined streets...peaceful.
