Par4QC Hoping to read as to why he chose a drop over hitting.
Just watched the highlights from the playoff, and the decision to take a drop instead of playing the shot from the edge of the water does seem strange - even if going for the green would have been too risky, it should have been fairly straightforward to pitch out into the fairway to leave a wedge shot from 80-100 yards rather than 150 yards after a penalty drop.
(A rule of thumb that I use for situations like this, or where I have a restricted swing because of trees/bushes/etc. - if I play the shot, am I guaranteed to be in a better position than if I take the unplayable lie penalty drop? If not, is the benefit from a good shot worth the risk over the guaranteed escape from trouble that the drop provides?)
