Best part in reading your post is...they never want to pay. I'm surprised anyone ever gets anything covered. That company that advertises on TV. CarShield. I wouldn't touch that fly by night operation with a ten foot pole. Ironically, a project I worked on from home almost put us in business with those schmucks.

If buying new, do some research about new vehicles and repair costs. The car industry is going through some behind the scene major changes. Don't buy a vehicle of a company that has been sold to Fiat, Peugeot, etc. which basically represents China $$, poor engineering in regard to repair and maintenance and poor quality in production. Basically buying a "name" for a quick profit. You will see mega bucks spent on advertising, but poor quality for your $$. If you want to buy high end take a look at resale value. The issue is basically high tech vehicles are very expensive to repair and the more complex the more likely to fail. If you have the bucks 🙂 the Corinthian leather is wonderful.

In years gone by we tended to focus on quality engines, still important, but today take a good look at the transmission in the vehicle you plan to purchase. Don't buy a vehicle with a transmission the manufacture has replaced after a year or sometimes even during the production of the model year. This is especially important if you are looking in the used market at a vehicle (car or truck) 1-3 years old and a 9 or 10 speed transmission.

The last car I bought for myself had terrible issues after its initial release. Was on a list of vehicles to avoid purchasing. The driver's door sticker was my friend. I verified that all the issues the vehicle had were prior to the date on the sticker. I figured a vehicle with all that bad PR was going to have everything in its power done to ensure the issues were rectified. The ones with the issues were in the first few months of production. The sticker showed mine was produced after all the initial issues. I've had that SUV for 14 years and it has never been in the shop a single time other than oil changes.

There are several Ford dealers around the country that specialize in selling Ford Extended Warranties a lot less expensive then your local Ford dealer wants. It is a Ford Extended Warranty so all Ford dealers accept it. I expect there are these type dealers for other brands. Search Google.

Toyota manufacturers extended warranties are a great deal. Most people do not know that when you sell the vehicle you can get reimbursed on the Warranty for the amount left.

The one we had you could bail on at any point. If we wanted out after a month, we could've just been refunded but if built into the deal, I believe, you're still going to pay finance charges that will equal what you paid for it in the first place, so you'll get half your money back, or so.

If you're the type to screw with sales people you can have some fun that way.

We added a warranty to my wife's car when we bought it. We bought it used and it wasn't cheap. It was obvious with how hard they were pushing the warranty that that was were they make the most profit. I declined until they cut the cost in half, and doing the math only added a few bucks a month and almost nothing in finance charges. Haven't used it yet, and will be ok if I never need too!

At best, I've broken even over the years on extended warranties with a couple of my cars. The rest have seen me taking a bath in the money I've forked over at closing.

I continue to purchase imports when I'm in the market, simply because I've had the greatest luck with Toyotas, Nissans, and Subarus. Considering I've been driving for 36 years, that's a pretty good track record.

I will say, however, that the new Ford Bronco looks kinda interesting.

Last time I bought new (Mazda) I took the standard warranty (3 or 5 years, can't remember which), not extended, and only when they agreed to throw in 3 years free service (it's a 12 month service gap) that cost about the same as the warranty. Oh and I paid cash so no finance charges. Never had to use the warranty, got a couple of minor recalls (one electronic, one to replace substandard pistons(?) on rear hatch).

It's not just finance and warranty where dealerships make their money, and motorcycle dealers are no different. I know this because my older brother (sadly no longer with us) sat with his bike mechanic one day some years ago and went thru the parts/prices catalogue for his bike. If I recall they stopped when they got to FIVE times the value of the bike and didn't include fitting/labour charges.

Personally, I would not purchase an extended warranty. In 40 years of driving GM vehicles I've only had to do 1 transmission and 1 engine. To me, those are the only kind of repairs where an extended warranty would be worth buying, and I am able to do those myself anyway. At one time I worked heavy repair at a dealership, and also worked at a transmission shop. It may seem like good insurance for those that don't want to do those repairs themselves, but the odds of having those major repairs are relatively low for most all vehicles. I would think if it happened, a personal or small loan for the repair would be just as cost effective or even better. Plus you wouldn't have the hassle of dealing with the warranty company. I've dealt with some, they like to find a way to not pay.

Interesting comments! For something like a TV I'll skip the warranty. I just hate having the potential for a car payment and car repairs. If that happens time to trade it in, ha!
