Just learned something interesting. Daughter went outside with her transition lens eyeglasses and they darkened up to the point that she almost looked she was wearing glasses for the blind. 5 minutes inside and they are still pretty dark. Apparently they are not only light sensitive, but quite cold sensitive too. The bad news, from her perspective, is the snow is too powdery to do anything with. She's bummed out now. We haven't lost power or had any announcements about blackouts around here yet as far as I know.

mikeintopeka Bingo Mike! Solar and wind are fabulous energy sources, but not always reliable. And as I am sure you are experiencing today, demand is highest when weather is bad.

I worked at that Nuke Plant (near Burlington) from 87-97. I remember we had an issue during a cold streak where the cooling water from the lake was actually freezing on the intake screens. Nobody thought that freezing water at 30-40 feet below the surface would happen, but it was cold for a long run. We had to shut the plant down until the ice cleared. Had to do some modifications to make sure that wouldn't happen again.

Here in SoCal, we don't have the weather issues. We just run out of power on hot days and get blackouts. We do have to shut down the power lines in high winds due to wildfire hazard.

Sparky - you're the best Sparky. Interesting that you were at the Burlington plant. I was invited to tour that facility (passed background check!) with tight security even though it was right before 9/11. That monstrosity is impressive! The only negative to come out of Wolf Creek (imo) is that cooling lake. It has claimed the lives of numerous fishermen due to strange currents and high waves if the wind is blowing just right from my understanding.

predicting a warmer/much warmer than average April & May in the Eastern USA.

Just found out that the fireplaces have a little battery tray for power outages. Unfortunately the daughter doesn’t have the right batteries, lol. She’s going to ask the neighborhood on Facebook.

livegolf Oh and I'm seeing 5 to 8 inches of additional snow on Wednesday or lots of freezing rain. Might be a while before reliable power is back in DFW

Ironic the Dallas skyline was powered all night with no interruptions.

Would also bet the upscale neighborhoods didn't lose any power.

Some have been without power for hours and hours. Others like us are every 11 minutes. That's gotta be good for our electronics.

Questions regarding equity have to be asked. Why were some just blistered by outages and others unscathed? Reading some people bragging they haven't been touched is upsetting when you're getting nailed every 11 minutes.

Texas better get it together. How does Minneapolis, Chicago, NY handle their demand without rolling blackouts? I don't buy some of the excuses I've been reading for why this is happening. I really don't buy it when you keep the skyline powered all night while some families are out for hours and hours. Ain't right.

A friend's sister who lives in Austin has been without power for over 9 hours.

Reading the elderly are sitting in their cars to get warm. Unreal.

Toulon Not sure if true, but I read that ERCOT has minimal energy to restart things, hence the very long periods without power.

On the plus side the power will be out again in two months after a nasty hail storm with tornado sirens rolls through.

I'd rather sweat than freeze but we're all different. I get that you can only take so many layers off vs. putting as many as you want on, but it's tough being freezing and the pipes don't like it.

Bring the hail and wind.

Sounds like situation in Texas is worsening, not getting better. Power may be out for a lot more of us and for a lot longer.

I wonder how many will die due to this situation? Lots of lawsuits going to be launched. Very unequitable situation. That gives lawsuits some legs. There is no equity here.

Warnings being issued about no access to water as supply and pipes freeze. I may head out in a few minutes to try and find some bottled water. We're usually stocked to the gills but we're down to our last few bottles.

Don't want to be relying on boiling snow to drink if we even have power to do it.

Charged a few things in the car and debating on risking the roads tomorrow on the I-20 outta here, gotta research the gas situation though.

Highways in dfw look clean surface streets are rough. Home depot is open, a couple gas stations and that's about it.

No outages here in Oklahoma, but wife did see a post on Facebook (so who knows if true) that Oklahoma is going to start doing rolling black outs. We haven't lost power yet, but who knows. I don't live in a very big city, so not sure what the energy usage is like in my area. Lucky to have a gas fireplace we can crank up if we do lose power.

Ironic. My wife just mentioned using our gas fireplace. We don't turn it on after I almost blew the place up years ago. We use the little duraflame logs in there.

I would assume you would get the rolling blackouts, but hope you don't
