Played Wampanoag Country Club in a scramble tourney yesterday. Really beautiful private club where the other half lives. The course was redone a few years back and they just hosted the State Amateur tournament so it was in fantastic shape. They also have a brand new clubhouse which is stunning. Pretty much perfect weather too mid high 70's breezy and not humid at all.
We shot -4 (6 birdies + 2 bogeys) which was good for 6th place. Winning was -10 and then 2nd was -6. A LOT of scores over par. It is a tough track with a lot of sloping fairways and seriously sloped fast greens. Being above the hole was an almost guaranteed 3-putt even in a scramble. The rough was definitely in tournament condition and you could easily lose your ball in it even if you watched where it went. Not many trees which is weird for New England but many holes are well bunkered and we saw a lot of groups playing out of bunkers...which is also weird for a scramble but it was that difficult of a course.
I played ok and luckily we had a young bomber in our group that was hitting it straight every other hole. I GPS'd one extra long drive at 304 and we had a bit of a breeze into us. He was only about 65 yards ahead of me on that hole 😞
The old guys, my neighbor and I, did have a moment of glory on a shorter but narrower par 5. The tee shot had a large bunker stretching across the fairway at ~ 210 yards and it was tree lined. We both flew the bunker but he got far enough to hit the steep downslope and gain more yards. We had only 210 to the green but playing 180 to front edge. I hit a really nice 6i that stuck the front of the green and we lipped out eagle putt to settle for birdie.
