Typhoon And good luck getting a big change to stick unless you do it for a living with a coach watching you.
Disagree with this. Big change is relative.
All I'm doing is tipping the shaft back and not forward in my down swing aka shallowing / flattening. Basically swinging below my shoulder and not steepening the shaft. There's many different swing thoughts that work for different golfers doing this.
Mine was swinging under / under. Go back under and come down under. Harry Vardon's was feeling like he was swinging down toward his right heel. Jack Nicklaus's feeling was there was razor wire and he wanted his hands to swing under the razor wire. Sergio's is pulling down like ringing a bell.
Other feelings like turn your glove logo to the sky, get the butt of the club pointing more out toward the ball, swing the shaft down beside you like landing a plane, unbending the right arm sooner, lead with the body and leave the hands and arms behind you, skipping a stone across a pond, imagine you're club is a hocky stick and your taking a slap shot, think of Matt Kuchar etc., etc., etc...
All of these and more are thoughts to shallow / flatten or get the shaft in the 'slot' and not on top of the slot / plane (too steep) of the down swing. Again, I physically cannot get my right shoulder / elbow to externally rotate.
What that means is I naturally internally rotate my right elbow / shoulder. My right elbow goes back behind me in my backswing. Like pulling and starting a lawnmower. I physically cannot get in the waiter holding a tray position at the top. The drinks / food would spill on my head. lol
Now you can play from there as my elbow does come back to my side in the down swing. But the shaft is too steep. I cannot shallow in transition. And looping it like Jim Furyk or Matt Wolf doesn't work for me. So I have to try and flatten from the get go of my backswing.
I'm choosing to try to flatten my swing because the ball striking is much better. With my natural steep swing I hit from the middle of the clubface to the toe. Toe down divots. The only good thing is I never shank the ball. lol
Also, because of technology hitting off the toe especially with irons you lose no distance. But the feel is not flush. So yeah, I'm chasing the feel of a solid shot and not score. Going to any swing coach is a crap shoot.
With video on your cell phone you can see what your faults are. Yeah, every golfer has swing faults. I know my main one and had great success in fixing it. But after a 7 month layoff the feel isn't there. I'll get it back. 😉
Edit: I'm more on the analytical and cerebral side when thinking about the golf swing. But we can't see ourselves swinging on the course. So we need a feel to hopefully do what we're trying to do in the swing.
But we know that feels aren't necessarily real and that's the insidiousness of the golf swing. The harm is subtle and cunning and is secretly waiting to show itself without warning.
