Played in a scramble fundraiser today. We were supposed to have a foursome, and the fourth guy was our ringer. I get there and find out at the last minute that he isn't coming.
Now i am the best player in the group. Plus I had to hit a lot of extra shots because we were down one guy. It was 95 degrees with a heat index of 104.
On our very first hole we have a twelve foot putt for par and we all missed it. Forgot we had mulligans. Marked down the bogey and moved on. On the second hole I hit a six-iron to three feet for the kick-in bird.
None of us could get a drive in the fairway for the first ten holes. We ended up with two bogeys in the first five holes.
Things got better over time for a while, but then it got really hard to keep playing because the heat was oppressive and relentless. By the end we were deliberately hitting to shaded areas and not hitting our fourth shots off the tee, etc.
Despite that we ended up with a 68. We had six birdies and two bogeys. When all was said and done we ended up one shot out of the prizes. That danged twelve-footer on the first hole came back to bite us!
Overall, I hit a lot of good shots and carried the team. I made two putts longer than 25 feet, and several in the 15-20 foot range. If our ringer would have come, we would have been competitive for the first flight. It's hard to score well when your drives are maybe 230 and in the trees all day long. In that heat, to be honest I was just happy that nobody got heat stroke and passed out. I went through three bottles of water and a Powerade and didn't pee at all. Probably lost about eight pounds of water weight. Still feel exhausted! With all the extra shots, too, it feels like I played 27 holes in triple-digit heat.
