QR3 for club champs. I won't be in the matchplay after carding a no score on #13 due to fabulous piece of game mismanagement. Started brightly - 4, 4, 4, 5, 3 against par of 3, 4, 4, 4, 3 - then a fairway bunker off #6 led to a good recovery and a PW overhit just enough to bring 3 putt into play, which I duly managed for a 6.
Then a lost ball off #7 tee overcooking a lazy L-R dogleg that you don't actually need to turn the ball on, you can drive it straight if you want. Idiot. Almost repeated the trick with my next ball, then overshot the runway and left a devilish chip back to a green that runs from back to front. 2 putts for a 7, and that just about finished my championship challenge. I had a 71 in QR1 but needed to go really low today and that wasn't happening. Par, bogey on #8 and #9 (both par 5), 44 to the turn. Is there a chance to salvage something?
Well the next 2 par 4s put paid to that - drove a bit right on #10 but too long, blocked out by trees, so chip into play, chip onto green and 2 putts for a 5. #11 drive clipped a tree (my line was too tight from the tee, more idiocy, chip back to fairway, came to rest in the deepest divot I could find. No chance of reaching the green, just knock it in general direction, chip and 2 putts for 6. Now my challenge is definitely finished.
So I birdied #12, 200+ yard par 3 - 5i to the green and made a 15' putt. Then #13 ... appropriate number ... drove too far right finsihing at the bottom of a steep slope, in thick grass. Flubbed a 9i, now I'm behind trees, PW over the top of those and I can get away with 5 or 6 ... nope, thinned into grass so long I could lose my dog in it. 🤣
Game over, relax, 5 to go (par 4, 3, 4, 4, 4), I went 4, 3, 3, 4, 5 ... that birdie on #16, 431 par 4 : drive left me 170 out, hit a 5W to 3' and putted it out. Stupid stupid game, golf. All added up to an adjusted gross of 83 so I'll get a HC cut of around 0.4 🤣
