Out in Utah on vacation. Played three nine-hole rounds in the past three days with my father, who is 89.
Using clubs I don't normally use, no range finder of any kind (the course I played today didn't even have yardage markers at all). Not really keeping score. Played the green tees with my father all three rounds.
Overall, good ball striking for me. Today I think I had either 6 or 7 pars, and my worst hole was bogey, so I think I shot 38 or maybe 39. It was kind of interesting playing old school, just looking at the green and pulling a club ('looks like maybe an 8-iron?').
My dad is finally starting to act his age on the course. I don't think I have ever beat him before, but the last time we played together was probably 7 or 8 years ago and he has lost a lot of distance in that time. I thought I word be elated the first time I beat him, and I would have been, if it had been 5 years ago and he would have been competitive and it had come down to the wire or something. As it was, though, unfortunately, I blitzed him and there was no joy in it at all. It was actually kind of sad. He still mostly keeps it in play, but he doesn't have any distance anymore.
Oh well, I guess at 89 to still be on this side of the grass and still playing is pretty good.
