Often true, particularly with regards to unnecessarily small tolerancing. But, in order to push the boundaries of technology you also need to push the boundaries of manufacturing. Unfortunately the products are often rushed without investing the time and money needed to get the manufacturing issues ironed out and you do end up with products that are not made with well controlled processes. Most companies are marketing driven and don't seem to put the thought and investment needed into manufacturing and reliability.
