On the PGA Tour the average 7-iron spin rate is 7000 rpm. What kind of ball did you use and how accurate is the simulator?

Supposedly spin on mats can be lower by 1000 or more.

Thanks for fixing the pics Pellmell. Our sim at work is right, that’s exactly how far my 7 iron goes. How it gets there, I have no idea, that’s the sims job. But it is dead on. My ball hits the green and it’s close to its pitch mark

i get on our GC2 though and it’s the same, spin is never high for me, I tend to release the club early and sort of hold it off. I play the ball more forward in my stance as well which scrubs some spin. Don, you are correct too about mats knocking off spin.

I'm going to start keeping an eye out for a 24-25 degree high tech iron or head that will launch very high. I'm not sure about the loft because it will replace my old tech 24.5 degree iron. I don't want more distance from it; I want more height. So maybe I should be looking for a 26 or 27?

I keep wondering about the Maltbys.

I check hitting on real fairway, out of real rough, onto real green and various trouble shots before I made a decision.

Does distance really matter? Isn't accuracy with a 27 deg, or a 35 deg. iron what iron play is about?

I have a buddy who is obsessed with distance. I asked him a similar question. "Do you really need your irons to fly further or do you just need to know how far your irons go?"

I've said before getting that distance with a shorter shaft is going to be more accurate.

in those pics the Nike is more accurate only because the Mavrik was just an iron I grabbed out of his bag and hit a couple times and the Nike was mine

that’s the way I feel...I could give a shit less what club it takes to get there. Iron game is not my strong suit though but I do smash the driver pretty good 😀

Typhoon There is the intelligent response to “does distance in irons matter?” Does hitting an 8 iron vs a 6 iron matter in terms of accuracy? It sure as heck does for me.

My biggest problem is, do I create a hole at the bottom of my bag? The answer is 100% yes for me, I bought X Hot Pro irons which were significantly hotter than everything I had before, I had to rebuild the bottom of the bag to cover gaps. I’m still not 100% comfortable with those wedges, so ultimately it has led to some better shots on full irons, but less accuracy with wedges, far more practice time is really needed to fairly say it was a bad move, but for my limited ( a couple of ranges sessions a year) practice schedule, it’s hard to work those adjustments out to a good degree of accuracy.

This is ultimately why I want to go to SL irons, hopefully making little practice, less of a disadvantage.

I’d rather have the partial flighted shots with wedges from 150 than a full 9 iron. It depends on the person but I’m much more accurate and comfortable hitting those shots.

That is a shot with which I am not familiar.......

150 yards for me on flat ground, no wind is a 6h.

I would prefer a 9 iron from 150, but if I really want to hit it that far I will continue to use my 6 iron.

If an overly strong 8 iron is about the same loft as a 6 iron can the 1 inch difference in club length really make that much difference in ball striking?

I actually rotate between these 3 sets. Truth be told if I had to bet my life on it I’d probably use the Kenny Smith’s. The cambered sole and 100 gram r shafts suit my current game. The Nicklaus have firm tt custom lights and the limited’s have dy gold R that are starting to feel heavy.

It would interesting to see you compare the 35 degree Mavrik (9-iron) to your 35 degree 7-iron. Based on how far you hit that "7-iron", with 10-12 yard gaps I'm guessing the two same-lofted clubs are going to travel about the same distance.

That makes a lot of sense since the two sets seem to be about 2 clubs apart in terms of lofts, and you carry this 7-iron almost exactly 192. So if you were to put together a set of all the same exact lofts as your Nikes, each club would essentially just be 1" shorter than what your Nikes are and deliver the same distance.

I really wish manufacturers would just put the lofts on the clubs rather than numbers, but the reason they don't is that would be too confusing for too many golfers. In fact I really like what 1-Iron golf is doing with their new single length irons, where they don't have any numbers on the club but instead they include a bunch of hosel-clips with different yardages on them. You take the clubs to a simulator or range and hit each of the clubs a bunch of times, and as you learn how far you hit each club you simply attach that yardage club to the club and you're all set! The loft or number of the club doesn't matter one bit, all that matters is that you know how far each club goes.
