Tis the season for fall golf......tradition has been to get as many Monday's and Friday's that I can in October and November and play golf, most times 36.
Today -
White Lake Golf Course in the a.m.....been here a handful of times .....😍it. Northwoods feeling front and a more open/ish sprawling back 9 that crosses several roads. Quite a bit of lots for sale for houses, but that does not detract from the back being good. $25 to walk, and it's a long one🙃. Good layout, good condition, good green complexes - most all pushed up to a certain degree and a few shoot up like a volcano. Depending on the time of year there are Mighican Peacocks roaming about...if you don't see em you can hear em🙃. A different kind of course that does not disappoint. 9 and 18 are both little devils. 9 a long par 4 that sweeps HARD right to left.....it's almost a semi circle but not unfair. You can take on the risk and try to sling a hook but their is not much room. Forrest left, trees right and inside that long whispy stuff, same dead straight, left center thru the fwy is a bunker, at about 100 yards the fwy slopes severely down and there is a pond guarding the front/left and the green looks tiny from the elevation change. I hit a 4w to 191/182 with the downhill. Its cold, slight breeze in, I pull a 23* hybrid and hit what I thought was gonna be perfect. Nope not on the green, but no splash🤔, I walk up and see it just outside of the pond which has receded some and on the bank. Pretty easy up and down for a par. 18 is a downhill tee shot that, uphill approach. Sweeps to the right and blind. Forrest right, smattering of trees left. I hit a slicey bunt drive but feels like it's gonna be trouble. Just got away with it with a look from 98/105 with the uphill. Hit a nice high cut GW to the back of the green which is one of the volcanos narrow right to left but long., if you miss short or left it's rolling a bit, bunker right. Two putt for par 🙃
Tuscumbia, the oldest 18 hole course in the state. It really could be special, but they planted way too many trees. It's a beautiful piece of property with some nice elevation change, rolling terrain, and some pretty cool green complexes. The front feels narrow and these trees are ridiculous and quite a few encroach and can block approaches. They could cut down a tree a day for a year and it might not be enough. It is still a good layout and fun, but you might have to punch a few shots that would otherwise been an aerial shot. Back a little different as the corridors are wider and there is more elevation change...both par 5 LS are slightly uphill off the tee but then the layup or if a big hitter 2nd to green is blind as there is a hill and then it crests down at about 200y, and the approach is downhill a good 10y. Mouth of green is open and flat but then perched on left or right and bunker on opposite side, and perched on back. Miss us almost always gonna be short, otherwise up and down gonna be dicey. The par 3,s on the back are great. #10 a huge punch bowl green. #13 a short uphill wedge guarded by bunkers front left and right and the putting surface cannot be seen. Requires a good shot! Love the back. @scotts33 and @sdandrea1 and my dad need to get the Stihl chainsaws out to get the front in gear🙃.....a note about that. It rained off and on and I played thru the other guy on the course, who had enough and was waiting it out on #10. Turns out he was the guy with the Maine plate in the lot, grew up in the area and played as a kid. We yucked it up for a few mins, and he eventually put his hand shoulder height, stating that was how tall the trees were when he played it as a kid. Crazy. Place has a ton of character!
