The Pistons came about at a great time imo... Chuck Daly was an old-school head coach and had a stable of not just really good players, but great characters that every fan (with exception of their own fans) loved to hate.
Rodman was a loose cannon and did whatever he wanted. Chuck Daly somehow kept him focused long enough to be a huge part of the Bad Boys era. Zeke played the soft-spoken angel, but many saw beyond the halo over his head. Some may recall the rift between Magic and Isaiah that became incredibly bitter and personal, with him publicly questioning Magic's sexuality and causing feuds with other players in the league, which ultimately led to his snub from the 1992 Olympic team. Per Magic and Larry's book, "When the Game Was Ours":
"Isiah killed his own chances when it came to the Olympics," Johnson said in the book, per the AP. "Nobody on that team wanted to play with him. ... I'm sad for Isiah. He has alienated so many people in his life, and he still doesn't get it. He doesn't understand why he wasn't chosen for that Olympic team and that's really too bad. You should be aware when you've ticked off more than half of the NBA."
Of course, they mended fences later on, but still it painted a picture of Zeke that was anything but flattering. Vinnie Johnson, the hard-nosed, yet non flamboyant role player who clocked in every day and did his job as that of a GM factory worker nearby.. Joe Dumars, whose steely demeanor and hard-nosed defense often overshadowed his playmaking abilities.. Bill Laimbeer, who in many circles was deemed Satan's incarnation because of his atheism and the evil he carried out in the paint...
Such a great cast of characters, and their back-to-back 2-year reign officially closed the curtains on the Lakers and Celtics dynasties. In essence, that Bad Boys team helped chisel the Bulls into the 90's dynasty they became. After getting the shit kicked out of them by the Pistons, Jordan realized that the Bulls lacked toughness and that became the focus for the team.
