I've developed case of shanks, especially on less than full swings. Maddening it is. Tried standing away further , closer , forward , back. It goes...

You have to hit your half-wedges the same way you hit a full wedge, just with a shorter swing. There is a tendency to take the body out of the swing on half-wedges, which, I think, contributes to the problem that shall not be named.

And hit those half wedges hard! The shanks often come when you decelerate.

ptjn1201 that's what I was trying to say. Hit them hard but with a shorter swing, rather than trying to baby them with a full swing

My 1st instruction tapes were from Ken Venturi. It was a 8 part series that started with the grip and proceeded through all aspects of the golf swing. Each segment was 1/2 hr. in length and I believe it appeared on TV also. There was also a segment on fixes to common problems. When he came to the sh--nk, he offered his opinion that the main cause was lifting up of the head. In fact, if memory serves correctly, he felt that raising up of the head was the only cause.

Had that tape also, enjoyed and benefited from the video.
Loaned it to a 'friend" and was never returned then he loaned to another and another and gone forever.
Must be pretty good.

I had them once on the 7th hole, so bad that if I hit 4 shots I would do a complete circle and be back where I hit the first shot. Walked to the clubhouse, had two beers and a shot of tequila, grabbed two more beers and met my guys on the 10th tee, played great ( for me) on the back , 5 over par or so.

It's been a few years since I watched them now. I've wanted to in the past two years but no longer have a tape player to play that style tape. For many years when I was struggling with one part of the game or another, I would review the part of the series that dealt with that problem and it usually got me back on the right track.

Venturi's 5 part of golf instruction was simple and easy to understand instruction done in old fashion by a clear and direct layout not explained like a rocket science sending people to Mars.
If you could find the tape, can be digitally mastered.

I went through this $hit last year. Started with wedges and grew huge, turned out two things made it go away. The biggest, head stays in the ball and doesn't move off it. Also my arms were getting away from my body a lot and letting the full shots get wild. Good luck!
