Components vs. OEM....
I hate to admit it, b/c I've been a "component guy" for 30+ years, but in thinking back, the BEST clubs I have ever played have been those OEM clubs I have bought after being fitted. I have to admit that, even though I've read a lot of Maltby's and Tom Wishon's writings on the subject, I don't have a lot of sophisticated equipment to work with (I have
a loft and lie machine, swingweight scale, etc. but no reliable way of measuring and matching shaft flex or frequency). That limits me to a being "cut and glue" guy. I am awed and impressed by what a lot of the guys on this board know about club building that I don't.
The best set of irons I've ever had were the Callaway XR16 Cup Face set I had several years ago. When their regular flex shafts got to be too stiff for me, I should have had them reshafted with Senior flex....instead I sold them..... dumb move on my part.....my next purchase will be a similar set only with Senior shafts. I just bought a used Ping G
SF Tec driver and tried it for the first time today......I KILLED that thing and seem to have gained 10-15 yards (more
on a couple!) compared to my Geek DCT I bought here and built for myself. I just think the R & D departments
that the OEM's have have done more to advance the technology of clubs, whereas many of the components
(Maltby and Wishon are exceptions, IMO) are not as good in their designs.
When I look at my bag, I'm playing 7 OEM clubs (woods and hybrids) and 6 components (Acer irons and Maltby wedges). As I said, I'll eventually find the set of Callaway irons l want, and then the numbers will be 10 OEM's
and only 3 components. While I will always enjoy tinkering with clubs and trying to refit something I buy at PIAS
to suit me, at long last I've learned my limitations!!
