I never leave anything in the back cargo compartment in my SUV. I even took out the cargo curtain that's designed to conceal items and valuables, since using it for whatever reason could also indicate to a lowlife pos that there may be valuables stowed underneath. If my car gets broken into, the thief ain't getting anything other than possibly a shitty factory stereo.
Luckily I've only experienced a car break-in one time in my lifetime, back in 1990 in a nice gated upscale apartment community in Columbus, Georgia while I was in the army. My wallet happened to be in there, along with obviously my license, my military ID, my credit cards, about $60 of cash, radar detector (which probably ended up being the reason for the break-in to begin with) etc. The inconveniences of having to go through the process of reporting the theft, getting a new license and military ID card, informing the banks and waiting to get new credit cards issued etc. was enough for me to learn my lesson. It was a nightmare, not to mention the $500 deductible to have my windshield replaced. And of course - the thief was never caught.
Hard lesson learned!
