  • President's Cup Australia 2019 - Captain Tiger's 4 at-large picks?

Spuzz
"Maybe the US should just pick by rankings alone and be done with it".

If that's the case/criteria,then what's the point of having 4 picks?
Just take the top 12 US players by World Rankings and be done with it.
I believe it was Azinger who said he wanted his picks to be guys who were
in form and playing well at the time of him making his choices.
Theoretically you could have a player who was hot early in the season,
and moved up high in the World Rankings.
BUT in recent months leading up to the Prez/Ryder Cups,
just completely lose their game, miss cuts, etc.
Should that player be chosen just because of their status/points in the WGR?

darpar If that's the case/criteria,then what's the point of having 4 picks?

    That's my point exactly.
Having the Captain's picks is to allow for flexibility for the scenario you described.
Early success, sucky late form, guy gets married etc.
The Euros almost never pick who you think they will (aside from Number 9 Guy) and they win most of the time, and also have younger guys on the roster for the future.
The USA (especially for this nothing President's Cup event) bollocksed it up, IMO.
It also looks like Old Boys Club is alive and well, imo.

Par4QC As he should. No one can feel slighted, in the least.

This statement does not mean I agree with the choosing. Some of these guys have dropped considerably down the rankings due to poor play throughout the season. I'd like to see the 'hot' hands be on course, as others would.

Tiger was being politically correct. ugh.

We are only pissing and moaning about Reed and Fowler vs. who Na and ?? Not TW fault that BK is hurt. Fowler and Reed are good pics.....you can make a case for Na, but then who.....seriously state your case.....no one and I mean no one jumps out on the page to me!

I like 4 captain picks as it allows for horses for courses and someone who was hot but yet did not make the top 8-12 spots.

ode Fowler and Reed are good pics.....you can make a case for Na,

Reed is a good pick and so is Na.
Fowler has a losing record at the Ryder and so does Tiger.
You could easily make a case neither is worthy and certainly not the future as far as winning there.
Both are winners at this event, but it's not on par with the Ryder.

Morikawa would be a good choice along with maybe Matthew Wolfe as they are both likely future Ryder Cup members.
      Maybe Na should be too.
I also agree that nobody "stands out" which is why I say take a chance on a couple of young guys and/or newbies and leave the retreads (Kisner, Horschel, Fowler, Kuchar, Mickelson et al) at home.

Spuzz Fowler has a losing record at the Ryder

I suspect the team does as well (druing Fowler's time).....I don't read a lot into it.....now if they had a winning record as a team and Fowler had a losing record during that run I'd be more concerned.

        Spuzz Morikawa

🙄 Ok, I'll give you points for going outside the box, but he does not deserve a pick

Spuzz (Kisner, Horschel, Fowler, Kuchar, Mickelson et al) at home.

He did less Fowler....and if he picks in line, minus himself guess who he picks......lol Chez fucking Reavie...... that'll instill some confidence in the team and bring on some viewers.

Reed and Fowler = good picks....I would've been fine with Na!

          ode bring on some viewers.

You are adding a variable now which should not be a concern as nobody will be watching, except Tiger fanboys
          😉

            15 days later

The Prez Cup team (along with some other top players from around the world) is in the Bahamas for the Hero Challenge and Patrick Reed was caught on tape (apparently) improving his lie in the bunker. Rules officials have decided to wait until he finishes to confront him with the evidence. They just finished. Fireworks show to start in 3-2-1.

Wasn't this the kind of crap he was accused by teammates in college?

Reed penalized 2 strokes. I'm working with the tv on in the background so I haven't seen the official statement from the PGA or Reed yet.

Weirfan - it was so subtle his moving the sand in the bunker to improve his lie yet so obvious.

mikeintopeka They just finished. Fireworks show to start in 3-2-1.

Just read an account of it. Must’ve been good video because he apparently didn’t try to dispute it. The officials even called him a gentleman😀

johnnydoom - I remember a couple of guys being informed of infractions during play and then melted down the balance of the round. So, I kind of thought there'd be some drama in the scoring tent. How could Reed dispute it? It clear as day as to what the results were when he took the club back. And I've defended the guy on these pages because a friend attended a fundraiser in his Woodlands, TX neighborhood to generate money to get him on tour and went on and on about what a great guy he was.

He did it twice and how could he NOT see the sand move behind his ball when he took a few practice
                strokes in the waste area?
And his caddy was standing right behind the ball and apparently said nada.
I have a feeling the Aussie's are going to have a field day with Reed next week!

Not making any excuse for Reed, but how is it different than, when in deep rough, a player repeatedly soles his club behind the ball....smashing the grass down with every soling? He was in a bunker where he could sole his club without penalty. I do understand he did move sand 2 times, but what if he had just soled the club several times to tamp down that same sand??

I, at first, had thought he knew what he was doing and was deliberate about it(cheating). After some thought about how the club would actually block his view of the 'swipes', from his stance over the club, I'll give him benefit of a doubt. His caddy must have been looking towards the fw, or looking at Reed directly, as caddies do, in order not to see it.

Much will be made of this, but should it? He is not President! 🤣
