The USGA on this subject takes this issue case by case. Trust me on this. You have no idea how many minutes on telephone calls and letters back and forth I made. And it all centers around lead tape and those company stickers in the cavity of the golf club. (You remember those stickers that kept coming off your clubs eventually). With the original NB they couldn't do a good job painting the stripes as it was very sloppy. So I suggested they use a tape of some sort. The USGA nixed that as a alighnment aid. So back to the paint. I offered the foundry extra $ to get it right and Voila they finally did. It was a simple wooden paint aid of some sort but it worked! SMT also had a.big problem with his 455 Plus head with custom logo stickers that some of you probably remember? I can't recall the details but maybe one of you can? I think it was because it was too easy to switch stickers or something like that? I told them the Majors stickers are falling out like crazy! The USGA fired back at me, "we are talking about woods here not irons!". Can you believe that reply from them? LOL I said to Carter Rich, "Carter, that's the best you can come up with?". That's when he told me I'll get back with you in 30 minutes. 3 days later Carter called me and said, "We'll rule them on a case by case ruling". Most clubs submitted after that with stickers and tape (lead or otherwise) is legal as long as it wasn't a sightline. Although case by case is still in effect.
