I have to add a new course to this list. I played it last week on vacation. It's called Royal New Kent and it's about halfway between Williamsburg and Richmond, VA. Mike Strantz was the architect. I played the "member's tees" and I golfed my ball pretty well on point all day so I did OK, but from the back this course is an absolute monster!
It was rated the 16th hardest course in America by Golf Digest. It has warning signs on the cart like the ones at Bethpage Black. Course rating 79.5, slope 155 from the tips. Even from the "member's tees" you could put up some big numbers in a hurry if you don't place your ball exactly where it needs to be placed.
Gorgeous course, though. Set up to look like you're playing in Scotland. The morning I went it was crazy foggy until it lifted at about the 4th hole. Really added to the effect; felt like I was actually in Scotland. Just a great, great golf experience; one I won't soon forget.
