Played RNK back in the mid-2000's. Didn't take long for me to mark it off of my must-play list for future trips to Williamsburg. I don't recall many specifics about the day, other than lots of fescue and the layout seemed too blotchy and scatterbrained for my personal tastes.

I found Golden Horseshoe much more to my liking, very scenic and conditions were awesome.

I love RNK though, Strantz's visual trickery and wacky greens are genius

Tobacco Road near Pinehurst NC
Mike Strantz converted a clay sand pit quarry into one tough cookie.
Only 653? From "Ripper" tees but other of blind shots forced carry waste areas and narrow landing spots. One round will not work well unless you have a local caddy.
Love it or hate it type course. Way too much for me .

Tot hill farms in Ashborough, NC much more enjoyable but also challenge for first run through . Lots of elevation change your running through rocky foot hills with rocky areas ,creeks, bolders, ponds. Also only 65?? YD from tips

Love tobacco road and tot hill.
TR, it's a love it or hate it place.
THF is a good but quirky course. Last 3 holes are like Strantz ran out of room.
Would not hesitate to play either 1 again.

Provisional lived like 3 miles from Tobacco road gc, played 2x, first & last.
Shot near my usual bogy golf first nine, "lost" scorecard on back nine.
If my game was some (a lot) better, I think it might be more fun

Didn't we have a NC FGI golf outing at Tot Hill Farms one year? I shot like a billion.

Although I live in Chesapeake, I still haven't made it up to Royal New Kent. I keep wanting to play it. I did play the Virginia Tech golf course once; I thought it was beautiful and I really enjoyed it, but I do remember that approach shots to the greens were difficult.

Another course in the Williamsburg area that is really tough for a first timer is Stonehouse. So many false fronts on greens, most with deceptive bunkers that look like they're greenside but are really 20+ yards from the green. Brutal. Several blind tee shots, too.

I think the River Course at Kingsmill Plantation. Former PGA venue for the Anheuser Busch event and currently an LPGA venue every year in May. Course winds and undulates and the greens are FAST. I broke 100....................barely.

Royal New Kent is no piece of cake as well.

Bandon Dunes was the toughest of the Bandon Courses.

Also the 3 courses you and I played in Minnesota with Dakotakid were all over 140.

The Pit down in Aberdeen NC -- I heard it closed. But it was rough. Slight misses were penalized severely. My buddy cleared the quarry on his approach to the green, landed just short, trickled back into foot long rough -- we looked for about 10 minutes (afternoon round, nobody behind us) and found 30 balls, but not his. This was an area smaller than a kitchen table. I played Bethpage Black from the tips about a year before the first Open there -- it was difficult but not as unfair -- almost good shots weren't unfindable. I had to accept I wasn't going to reach most of the par 4s in two, so I was laying up with 7 irons and wedging from 60-70 yards.

Yeah, it was years ago, but the Pit destroyed me. Played it from the tips. lost more balls that just trickled into the edge of the rough than I could believe. Opened par par, then took a 10 on number 3 and it went downhill from there. Went down later to extract revenge, found out the course was closed (Pinehurst bought it), decided to get my vengeance on Tobacco road with one of my best rounds ever.

Hobbit, squid, and paunchy and me played ASU Karsten on an early Sunday morning of some DS yrs ago... Me and paunchy were definitely blind trying to hit tee shots. The guy masquerading as me shot like a 38 on the front. Then I showed up and played the back 9....like in 48....

rsvman I've played both Blackhorse and Bayonet and for me its a tossup on which is harder. Bunkering on Blackhorse is brutal. Thing about it is they are not so hard that you think you can't play them. After getting your ass kicked for four hours you find yourself saying "I know I can play this thing". And they keep drawing you back. Best golf values in the Monterey peninsula IMO.
