After considerable deliberation, the Chiefs have just reported that Mahomes won't be playing this week. But given the speculation that has leaked from the organization the past few days that he possibly might play, I'm dumbfounded they would even consider him remotely fit to play.
Mahomes initial MRI presented the Chiefs some good news... his injury wasn't season-ending. Give him 3-4 weeks of R&R and give the injury time to properly heal and recover. But another MRI this week seemed to suggest even better news to Reid, and Mahomes was actually involved in team practices this week, downplaying the severity of his injury. Despite one of Mahomes' teammates saying (paraphrasing), "It looked awful. You couldn't tell where his knee was, it was that deformed."
If there were no consequences awaiting Reid and company via the media if Mahomes came back prematurely and re-injured his knee, I truly believe he would be playing this weekend. Mahomes would certainly be up for it, which is to be expected from a young QB who thinks he's invincible. It used to be that this type of injury would keep a player sidelined for at least several games, with precautionary time figured in.
I'm sure sports medicine has improved 1000% over the past decade, but man.... this kid's a gamer. He's the future of their organization. What this hints to me is that they're probably gonna put him back in the lineup next week vs the Vikings. A non-conference game that has little bearing on their post-season chances.
I'm not a doctor, I have no credentials. But this just seems really hasty to me.
